PIERCING THE SOUTHERN ALPS-PROGRESS OF THE WORK ON THE GREAT MIDLAND TUNNEL.
Slowly but surely the work of boring five miles through the mountain range that separates the East from the West C<a<t of the South Island is proceeding. A few weeks ago they were almost snowed up. The top photograph shows the month of the tunnel at otira during the snowstorm, ami the lower one is a picture of the plant for making rhe blocks fur lining the tunnel, and the “blow-up” used for elevating from the river bed the shing'e used in the concrete.
