THE WELLINGTON ROSE SHOW.

A SUCCESSFUL. EXHIBITION. Like its predecessor, this popular fixture was again a centre of attraction for Wellingtonians, the Town Hall being none too large for tin* num'ber of exhibits staged. One looks for a gradual upward movement in culture from any specialist floral club, ami certainly there is nothing to complain of in that respect con cerning the Wellington Rose and Carnation Club.

while some glorious blooms were staged. These, however, were mostly hybrid teas, the intermittent cohl snaps having retarded the ll.P.’s to such an extent that few have so far come into bloom this season. Mr. C. Trevethick was the most successful exhibitor, thus winning the Prime Minister’s rose 'bowl from Mrs. J. G. \\ ilson. of Bulls, for a year. 'That lady had her revenge by again annexing the coveted “champion bloom” of the show, this time with an enormous bloom of Doan Hole. These doughty champions have each secured the rose bowl twice. If either is again successful it becomes the winner’s property.

Then' exhibits year by year are really a treat, and an education in themselves as to how far Nature can be assisted in producing its very best. The special class for exhibitors within a radius of five miles of the Wellington (1.P.0, was well contested with some very fine blooms —Mr. G. Jeffrey scoring first, with Mr. 11. A. Fox second, and Mr. S. G. Pearce third, both being very close on his heels. Twenty-four ladies’ decorated tables formed quite an outstanding feature of the show, the first and third prizes going to tables decorated with sweet peas. A magnificent exhibit of pot plants consisting of calladiunis, gloxinias, ferns of all kinds, and many beautiful flowering and foliage plants secured a Royal Horticultural Society medal for Mr. G. A. Chapman, of the Lower Hutt, Miss Joseph scoring second with a smaller but very tasteful exhibit. The show was too early for earnations and sweet peas, those staged Hieing of poor quality. The attendance both during the afternoon ami evening was excellent.
