Thousands of pounds worth of hind are washed away every year by river floods, the evils of which have been much intensified by the insane, unchecked deforestation that still goes on in spite of every warning, and thousands more are spent annually in protective works, such as are shown here on the banks of the Takaka, Nelson. The favourite method is to run out from the threatened spot a groin of river rocks held in place by a network made of heavy fencing wire.
