He was not going to make promises of what he was going to do if elected, because he did not count much on election promises. If an angel came down from heaven he did not think that he could grant all the promises made by one candidate to the electors of Parnell — Mr .J. >s'. Dickson, Parnell. Every assistance should be given to the Maoris to utilise their own land. He could-not see how the native land question could be settled without using the same means for placing Maoris on their own lands as those used for placing Europeans on the land — Sir James Carroll.
