UCiooer Bridge Drive. A Bridge Drive will be held at the Cadena Tea Rooms, Cashel-street, this evening (Thursday), the proceeds to be given in aid of the Society for the Protection of Health of Women and Children. So very many people sympathise with the objects and work of this Society, that the gathering is expected to prove a great success. Cli ris toll ui'e*i Comedy Club. The Christchurch Comedy Club gave a highly commendable and enjoyable performance of Sir A. W. Pinero’s comedy “The Schoolmistress.” At the Theatre Royal on Tuesday night some of the acting was very good, notably that of Miss A. Saunders, and Mr. A. B. Young. Miss Saunders’ dancing. which was graceful and pretty, was enthusiastically encored. The setting of the play was good. The attendance was very large, and as a whole the perform ante was most thoroughy enjoyed and appreciated by those present. The lady artistes were presented with several beautiful bouquets. A Concert. The Christchurch Orchestral Society gave the fourth concert of the season at the King’s Theatre on Wednesday evening. A delightful programme was given which included “Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony Overture”, by Kolar Bela, the Hungarian composer, of several sparkling dance?. A dainty valse, “Intermezzo,” by Czilmlka, Norwegian-dance by Grieg, ami a Serenade by Meyer-llalmund, were phasing numbers. The last-named and the Intermezzo were loudly encored. The vocalists were Mr. A. Millar and Miss Vera Humphreys, each of whom wer? in good voice and smrg-Avedl. Miss Humphreys sang “A Request,” by Wood-ford-Finden, and for an encore “The Sweetest Flower.” Mr. Mißar's songs were Alyward's “Song of Hie Bow,” and “The King is Coming,” as nn encore. Mr. H. 11. Loughnan (President) announced 'that the Society will give a special concert in a few weeks time, which will

bring the season to a close. Amongst the large audience present were: Mr. and Mrs. 11. 11. Loughnan, Mrs. George Rhodes, Mrs. Wilding. Miss Pilliet, Miss Thomas, Mrs. W. I*. Townend, Mrs. R. Vincent, Miss Barnett, Mrs. Graham, Mr. Frank Graham, Dr. and Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. W. Stringer, Mrs. and Miss Guthrie, Mrs. Wall, Mrs. J. Fairhurst, Mrs. C. Ollivier. Mrs. C >ok. Miss Fairhurat. The Boating Season. The opening of the boating season took place on Saturday afternoon at Avonside. The various boathouses were gaily decorated with Hags, and the clubs entertained numbers of visitors with afternoon tea. Unfortunately the day was dull and cold, consequently the display and attendance was not quite as large as had been expected. Some of the decorated boats were very pretty, and the various competitors for the most original were very funny and amusing. “Prohibition at Mayne” won the prize, but most people preferred the “Paper Bag Cookery Boat” with its crew of chef’s in proper costumes, male and female, with kitchen range and cooking utensils complete. A band was in attendance, and after the grand opening procession scratch races were rowed. The Canterbury Club held a small dance in the club rooms in the evening. Personal. Recent visitors to Christchurch include Mr. and Mrs. Richmond Fell (Nelson), who were staying with Mrs. Pyne at Bealey-avenue. Mrs. P. H. Johnson (Mt. Torlesse) is the guest of Mrs. C. Reid, Knowles-street, St. Albans; Mrs. Rossmore Wilson (Cheviot); Mrs. E. C. Studholme (Waimate); Mrs. J. Douglas (Waikari), the guest of Miss Humphreys (Fendalton); Mrs. G. Pinckney (Glenavy;) Mrs. and Miss Reynolds (Dunedin); Miss Sinclair-Thompson (Woodbury) the guest of Mrs. George Gould (Fendalton); Miss Ramsey (Dunedin). Mrs. F. Graham has returned to Christchurch from Timaru, where she was the guest of Airs. E. J. Le Cren. Mrs. Hugh Aeland and family have returned to Christchurch from Mt. Peel. The Misses Humphreys and Cracroft Wilson have returned to Christchurch from the North Island. Miss Denniston (Christchurch) has retuirned from a visit to Devin. Miss Boyle has returned‘ to Christchurch from Wellington. . f . . Miss D. Fisher has also returned irons her visit to Palmerston North. Dr. Chilton and Mrs. Chilton are having Christchurch shortly for a trip to England. Airs. Chilton was on Tuesday presented with a necklet and brooch (pearl-and amethyst), by the members of the St. Andrew’s Eadies’ Association. The presentation was made by the president, Mrs. John Deans (Riccarton.) Dr. and Mrs. Stevenson and family have returned to Christchurch from a visit to Sydney. Misses Quaine and Selig have also returned from Sydney.
