A Bit Absurd.

While appreciating loyalty and oldfashioned ideas, says “John Bull,” we confess that some of the Coronation claims strike us as a bit absurd. We can understand people who like to take part in historic ceremonies and to wear gorgeous uniforms, and generally make a tine display. But it does seem like a chapter in a fairy story, or a piece of childish play-acting, when yon have a solemn court composed of such serious

persons as Lord Morley, the philosopher, the Lord Chancellor, the Master of the Rolls, etc., devoting their great intellects to the discussion of whether certain people shall carry rods, or have silver batons, or provide a glove for the King's right hand, or support His Majesty's right arm while he is holding the sept re. Fancy presenting petitions and spending time, not to mention money, on mystifications of this kind! Evidently we still do enjoy a bit of play-acting, in spite of all our hustling and strenuous ci vilisat ion.
