May 4. This week has been an unusually quiet one from a social point of view. The public amusements, however, have been well patronised. At the Theatre.

The Theatre Royal was quite filled by a most enthusiastic audience on Saturday evening, the occasion being the farewell appearance of Mr. Hugh Ward. Toe performance chosen, “The Fencing Master,” was most artistically and realistically produced by Mr. Ward, Miss Palotta and their clever company.

Organ Recital. On Saturday afternoon, the last of th® series of organ recitals was given by Dr. Bradshaw at His Majesty’s Theatre. It is to be hoped that our new Mayor and City Councillors, will see their way to have these musical treats at popular prices. The farewell programme included Mendelssohn's fine .Sonata in C. Minor, and the well known overture to “William Tell.” Flower Show.

The Chrysanthemum Show which was held in the Alexandra Hall on Wednesday and Thursday was a very good one, the quality of most of the-exhibits being of a high standard. The principal exhibits were from Air. A. E. G. Rhodes' gardener (Mr. J. T. Sinclair), Airs Holdsworth. Mr. W. Bayliss, Mr. Beckett. Airs. H. Baxter came first (by public vote) whh her dinner table decoration, and Miss McNaught second. Amongst those present at the opening ceremony were: Mrs. Reece, Mrs. G. G. Stead, Mrs. Ronald Macdonald. Mrs. Deans, Mrs. Chilton, Airs. Carey-HilL Airs. Symes, Mrs. Reeve (Auckland), Airs. G. Alerton, Mrs Nancarrow, Mrs. MichaelCampbell, Mesdames Gibbs, Butterworth. Wiggins, Steiman, Rose, G. Rhodes. G. Gould, Duff (Wellington), C. Reid, Boyle, Studholme, Wigley, Misses Campbell. Butterworth, and Wiggins. Personal.

Miss Burnes, who has b?en staying with friends in Christchurch, has returned to Wellington. Alias G. Mills (Dunedin i is the guest of Airs H. G. Beswick. Carlton street, Alerivale.

Alias Ogle (Christchurch) is visiting Mrs Wells at Amberley. Miss Hanmer has returned to Christchurch from Racecourse Hill, where she was the guest of Mrs H. Knight. The Rev. H. and Mrs Reese (Auckland) -are the guests of Airs Merton (Park Ter.•ace). Airs. Al. Lewin (Methven) is in Christchurch. Airs W. Montgomery (Little River) is in town.
