REGAINING HIS STRENGTH—THE HERO OF THE BUDGET RELAXES ON THE GOLF LINKS.
The strain of the two fierce political campaigns that raged through the British Isles this and last year told heavily on Mr. D. Lloyd George, the Chancellor of the Exchequer. This throat was affected by the delivery of so many speeches—often three and four a day—in the closing hours of the last big fight against the House of Lords—land and otherwise. The doughty champion of the people and the land tax was unable to take his place in Parliament when the momentous session of 1911 opened. After spending some weeks of enforced rest at Brighton, on the South Coast, he returned to Parliament only a short time before he had to go away again. Last news by the mail was that the Chancellor was spending his time at Hythe. on the Sussex coast playing golf and taking long walks. His relaxation, however, could not be permitted without direct telephonic communication being established between his temporary home and London.
