The Greatest Achievement.
■ The• “Lokalanzeiger” has been eo'leet•ing the opinions oh persons of distinction in Germany and abroad"as to what they consider the greatest achievement' of recent years. Professor Metschnikow, of Paris, awards the palm to the discovery of radium, and hopes .that various Governments will encourage men of science to pursue their researches fin this direction. _ Dr. Charcot thinks the work of Shackleton and Peary the most meritorious. Herr Emile Jacob, a German Privy Councillor, considers addition the greatest event. Mdine. Filossophow, the Russian feministe, places the admission of women to Parliament' in the first rank, and next to that aviation. M. Maizeres is inclined to place the peace movement first. Ilja Pepin, the Russian painter, takes much the same view. The list concludes with the views of Moisant, whose tragic death is still fresh in the memory. With unconscious irony, he wrote, a fejv days before‘ his ■ekOrtli, the greatest conquest of the age is the triumph of the plus lourd qua I'air.
