Tibbutt, photo. THE COMPLETION OF ANOTHER LINK IN THE NORTH AUCKLAND RAILWAY SYSTEM. The opening of the Kawakawa-Towai section of the Whangarei Railway marked an important advance for the North of Auckland. The linking up of this gap has established communciation between Opua, in the Bay of Islands, and Whangarei, in the South. The line is now being pushed on from Scoria Flat, and in his opening speech the Hon. Jas. Carroll prophesied that this section would be completed within eighteen months, and five years would see the railway right through to Hokianga. At present only a tri-weekly service is being run from Whangarei to Opua, but in view of the increasing traffic the Department is being urged by the settlers to run a daily service. The opening ceremony, which took place on April 13th. was performed by the Acting-Premier. Hon. Jas. Carroll, who was presented by the County Chairman (Mr. H. Williams) with a golden key, in commemoration of the event. The photo, shows Mrs. Vernon Reed, wife of the member for the Bay of Islands, cutting the ribbon.
