SWIMMING.
A HARBOUR SWIM. THIRTY-NINE COMPETITORS. The harbour swimming race arranged by •the Pouson'by Swimming and Life-saving (Society, and which was postponed a fortnight ago on account of rough weather, took place on Saturday. Theie were 44 ’entries, and 39 faced the starter. The competitors donned swimming garb at the (Shelly Beac'h sheds, and were conveyed over to Northcote wharf in Mr A. Braund’s launch. Without delay they were got into position, and the first man was sent away mt 3.32, the others following according to handicap. A strong breeze helped the swimmers considerably, and accounts for the fact that the race was finished iu remarkably good time. ! H. Carlsen, a one-armed swimmer, was -the limit man, and he was receiving as much as 12 minutes from F. J. Keruott, scratch. Carlsen seemed to be near midstream when the next men, receiving Gm. 80s., were sent away. Up to this point attention was directed ou Carlsen, who appeared to be makiug good headway, but now, in the space of a few seconds, there were over a dozen men in the water, and •they were Quickly followed by the others. Swimming in fine style, the various teams of- three and four bracketed on the same marks, made fast time over the first quarter, at which stage there seemed little or no change In the positions; except for the limit man, who gave way too much on the tide, the swimmers kept a straight course. In the.early stages it was evident that the scratch man was set a hopeless task, and this was noticed with regard to several other compel!toi‘s. This was a fault (last year, aud in an endeavour to keep the competitors closer together, the handicaps ivvere considerably cut down this year, but a still further readjustment is necessary if this result 4s to be brought about, for in the last quarter -the men were strung put over a distance of quite 300 yards; but, regarded from the point of physical condi lion, the race was highly successful, all the competitors reaching the finishing line. A boat kept up with each swimmer throughout, carrying pace-makers, who took it in turn to pace their respective men.
The first to finish was W. Lunn, 5m 30s; theu came H. Singe, 3m 30s; and C. Stone, Gm. K. J. McQuillam, 2m was fourth; H Hyams, 5m 30s, fifth; W. Henderson, 3m 30s, sixth; F. J. Keruott -scr., seventh; H. Carlsen, 12m, eighth; 11. Baxter, 3m, ninth; T. Davis, 4m, teuth; and W. T. Matthews, Is, eleventh. 11. Singe, who won the event last year in easy fashion, made the fastest time, covering the distance, about a mile, in 22m 40s. The winner’s time was 24m. Other times were recorded as follows:—F. J. Keruott, 23m 455; McQuillan, 23m 255; C. •Stone, 26m 15s; 11. Baxter, 26m 30s; W. Henderson, 275; Hyams, 27m 50s; W. T. Matthews, 28m 555; -T. Davis, 30m 25a; Carlsen, 375.
