Sports and Pastimes.

WITH SAIL AND MOTOR

fIOTES FROM THE WATERFRONT.

(By

RINGTAIL.)

ZTTX OST of the boats went away for 111 the week-end, but, owing to A > / the light wind prevailing, few J of them got as far as they intended to. The race for the Yacht Squadron’s boats took them furthest afield, their destination being Kawau. The Waione and Eulalia got to Kawakawa, and report that several boats which were in company with them in the early stages were left behind, all spreading out and making for the most convenient resorts. The Rarere was at Matiatia, and the Celox brought up at Tiri. The patiki Bronzewing has again changed hands, and her destination now is Napier, where there is a fine fleet of patikis. Before the season opened the Bronzewing was purchased by Mr. A. Sutherland, and during the past week she has been sold >to Mr. Dodd, of Napier. She will be forwarded to the Hawke’s Bay centre by train some time this week. Mr. V. Masefield’s yacht Thetis left Auckland on Saturday for a fortnight’s cruise to the North. Commodore Howden’s launch Roma left for a fortnight’s cruise to the North on Saturday last. On the same day Messrs. Court and Taylor’s launch Elsie went away on a similar cruise. The Governor's Yacht. ro BE READY IN A FORTNIGHT. The overhaul of his Excellency the Governor Lord Islington’s, chartered yacht Viking is nearing completion in the Auckland graving dock, and it is expected that the yacht will be handed over to his Excellency in two or three weeks’ time. The work of renovating the Viking was entrusted to Mr. C. Bailey, who built the boat some 18 years ago. When her copper was stripped it was found that her timbers were as sound as the day she was launched, which speaks well for the quality of local material. After undergoing a complete overhaul from truck to kelson the Viking is now in spick and span condition, and to all appearances a new vessel. The hull above the water line is painted black, with gold line and scroll work at bow and counter. The lower part of the hull is being reeoppered, and this affords pleasing contrast to the black topsides. The teak skylights and companionway!? on deck, and the scraped and stained spars, help to complete a picture that is pleasing to the yachtsman’s eye. The interior of the vessel has been renovated on sumptuous lines. There are three compartments, the main saloon occupying central position, with the ladies’ cabin aft and the crew’s quarters forward; all compartments are roomy. The saloon is a spacious compartment, and has a width of nearly 12 feet. It has sleeping accommodation for 8 people, ■while the ladies’ cabin has accommodation for four and the foc’sle for 2 people. The saloon ceiling is painted white, picked out in gold, and the sides are panelled in polished mottled kauri and rimu. The upholstering is in moquette of handsome design. The ladies’ cabin is a dainty little compartment. The prevailing colour is white, with gold headings, etc., and the upholstering is in the delicatest of blue rep. silk. Everything requisite for' a cruise is included in "the Viking’s outfit, and her general appointments could scarcely be more complete. The Viking’s demensions are: —Length overall, 59ft, beam 12ft, depth 22ft, draught Oft Bin, registered tonnage 30. She was built by Mr. C. Bailey at Auckland in 1892 for Messrs. 11. and E. Blomfield, and is the largest yacht in New Zealand waters. It has been arranged that his Excellency will take over the Viking on March

15, and, with his family and suite, will leave shortly after on a cruise. Before coming to Auckland his Excellency will spend some time fishing at Taupo. ROYAL YACHT SQUADRON RACE. ALL NIGHT SAIL. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron 'held a cruising race to Kawau on Saturday afternoon last. Owing to the light wind, dropping at times to a calm, the race was protracted unusually, and it was after eleven o’clock before the last boat crossed the finishing line. The run home proved equally monotonous, and the boats did not •reach Auckland until this morning, being about 18 or 19 hours on the trip. The following boats started in the race:— Ariki scratch, Rawene 16m, Aorere 25m, Kotiri 27m. With a light breeze prevailing the boats were sent away to an even start, and the positions were unchanged down to the Rangitoto beacon, where a flat calm was met with. Rawehe stood into the Wade shore, and picked up a light N.E. breeze; the other boats held on and picked up a light south-easter. On reaching Whangaparaoa the boats were again together. At this stage a half minute would have covered all four boats. From this point into Kawau, Rawene laid rather a better course than the other boats, which got too far in towards Waiwera shore. Rawene was first to reach the line, at about lOh 55m, Aorere ’ minutes later, followed by Ariki and Kotiri at Uh 15m and llh 18m respectively. On corrected times the result is as follows:—Aorere 1, Rawene 2, Kotiri 3. The boats left Kawau about 11 a.m. yesterday on the return trip to Auckland. The Rawene, which got away a little ahead of the others, reached her moorings at 2 a.m. to-day, Aorere arrived at 5 a.m., and Kotiri and Ariki, which had anchored off Narrow Neck, put in an appearance about half an hour later. A flat calm prevailed to Whangaparaoa, thence very light fair wind and heavy rain to arrival. NORTHCOTE REGATTA. The second annual Northcote regatta was held in the harbour on Saturday afternoon. The regatta is promoted by residents, and a liberal response provided substantial prizemoney. The officials connected with the regatta were located on the scow Glenae, kindly placed at the disposal of the committee by Mr. T. Bowden. A large crowd of people assembled on the hill above the point to watch the racing, find the Central Mission Band played a number of musical selections during the afternoon. The sideshows, which were held close to the flagship, created no end of fun, particularly the duel, in which two contestants with padded spikes fought in boats. The upsetting of the vanquished one caused much merriment. The general arrangements were well carried out, and credit is due to the officials, who managed the affair in a businesslike manner, not a hitch occurring throughout the proceedings. The officials of the day were: Starter of sailing races, Mr. J. Bowden; starter of launch races, Mr. J. Fearnley; judges, Messrs. 11. Cadness and A. Keyes.
