February 2. Afternoon Tea. On Thursday last Mrs. E. Kenny, Waikawa-road, gave an afternoon for her sister, Mrs. Nepean Kenny (nee Miss Millington), who is leaving shortly to join her husband in the North Island, hire. Kenny was the recipient of many good wishes from the guests with whom during her long stay in Picton she has been extremely popular. Among the guests were Mesdames Vickers, Madsen, C. Philpotts, Middleton, Burrer, Haslett, Williams, Newman, Misses Philpotts (2), Greensill (3), Scott, Kenny, Beswick, and Williams. Mrs. Kenny also gave an evening to the young folk with whom her sister has been associated in various ways, and which was a pleasant and enjoyable affair. Those present were the Misses Kenny, Dawkins, Greensill, Beswick, Scott, etc., etc. Traders' Picnic. This function, which was forgotten for several years, has suddenly been resurrected. An enthusiastic committee started an interest which was responsible for a picnic to beautiful Muratai. The weather was not entirely favourable, but the outing represented enjoyment, and hopes for better consideration next year from the elements. Bowling. The local bowlers had arranged a “Ladies’ Day” for Thursday, and many invitations were issued, but circumstances, in the way of a visiting team, upset their carefully-laid plans, which are now postponed for a week. Needless to say. the ladies look forward to the occasion when they will be provided for, instead of vice versa. No Flower Show. The Horticultural Society have decided that as the only hall suitable for the show is to be. pulled down immediately, so as to rebuild a theatre, they had better not hold the autumn show this year. Circus. Wirths' Circus, which was in Pieton last week, was sufficiently magnetic to draw the inhabitants of the town, country, and Sounds. Three thousand people were present. Disaster, The terrible accident at the Opouri Mill, Pelorus Sound, has east quite a gloom over the town. We rarely have such a terrible fatality to chronicle. The terrible sufferings of the dying and injured were matters to be remembered for all time by those present. Personal. Mr. B. Smith, who has been associated with the firm of Conolly and Burden, solicitors, Blenheim, is leaving for a trip to England. During his absence his place will be filled by Mr. Elliot Rutherford, LL.B., of Wellington. Miss Sealy paid a short visit to friends in Picton on her way to Nelson last week. Mrs. and the Misses Allen (2) have returned after spending an enjoyable montlj£fe>with Mr. and Mrs. Grenville Rutherford at Wairere Station, Masterton. Miss Richmond, Wellington, is on a sketching tour in the Picton district. Mr. and Mrs. Haughey, Koromiko, have returned from a month’s holidayin the King Country. Mrs. Philpotts, who has been spending some weeks with her daughter, Mrs Wynn-Williams in Wellington, has returned home. The Misses Fuller (2) and Miss B. Stuart have returned from Wellington. Dr. Morrison, Taranaki, wno has been spending a few days with his old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Vickers at the Bank of New Zealand, has returned home. He was intensely interested in the deep sea fishing, and had several outings, one especially, when Mr. Perano, in the launch Crescent, took the party to the hapuka ground. The doctor had the intense pleasure of drawing up a seventy or eighty pounder from the depths of the deep.
