December 17. Progressive Bridge. Notwithstanding the fact that it poured on Friday night, most of Mrs Ba ikes’ guests turned up for her progressive bridge evening. Mrs Rennell secured first prize, and Mrs ( rawshaw the booby. Amongst those who braved the weather were: Mrs Mrs Richards, Mrs Glasgow. Mrs Uniacke, Mrs C rawshaw, Mrs Stubbs. Mrs Chapman, Mrs A. Renneli, Mrs E. C. Robinson, Mrs Miss N. James, etc. Children's Party. A delightful children's party was given on Saturday afternoon by Airs Fraser Grant. Many little tots were wofully disappointed when Saturday turned out wet. as outdoor games were impossible. Airs Raikes gave afternon tea at the tennis courts on Saturday afternoon .(club day ). Airs Uniacke gave a small bridge party On Monday evening. Progressive Euchre. Airs W. Webster's pretty house. Moun-tain-road. was the scene of a very gay .gathering on Tuesday afternoon, when many friends availed themselves of the invitation for a progressive /euchre party. Mrs Webster received in a very becoming frock of turquoise silk trimmed with lace; Miss Glynes wore white muslin, and Miss J. Glynes a pale mauve crepon. Amongst the ’guest?- I noticed: Mrs Grant, in mauve chiffon cashmere, black toque; Mrs Carey grey and black corded silk, handsome black lace fichu: Airs Budge, pale blue voile, with gold passementerie on corsage, large Leghorn hat with roses; Alr> Wake, black glace silk Empire costume. violet toque, white lace scarf ; Airs JDiugle, in black; Miss Dingle; Airs Anclerson, brown cloth brown hat; Miss 'Anderson, white cashmere, black hat: Airs E. On Tuesday evening Mrs Budge, Mountain road. gave an enjoyable bridge party for her sister-in-law, Airs ( arey, who is Maying with her. A Jolly Evening. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Dillon Carbery gave a jolly progressive euchre

party. After eight games were played, tea was served in the dining-room, the table being effectively decorated with pink flowers in silver vases. The hostess received her guests in a handsome black charmeuse Empress gown with jet passementerie on bodice and skirt; Mrs. Uniacke wore pale pink crepe de chine frock. The guests were:—Mrs. Carey, who wore grey silk, with black hat; Mrs. Rennell, black velvet Directoire gown, hat with roses; Mrs. Young, vieux rose Liberty canvas costume, large vieux rose hat to match; Mrs. Fookes, pale mauve dress, hat en suite; Mrs. Stubbs, striped saxe blue silk trimmed with bronze passementerie, saxe blue straw hat; Mrs. A. W. Budge, Paris lace Empire gown, large black hat; Mrs. 'Kimbell (Hawera), olive green silk crepon with lace yoke, turban-shaped hat; Mrs. George Harrison (Elt’ham). white braided linen tunic and kilted skirt, large black silk hat; Miss Harrison (England), rose-coloured linen coat and skirt, black hat; Mrs. Jack Lucena, grey taffeta costume, hat en suite; Miss Gurr. blue coat and skirt; Mrs. Hogg (Midhirst), sapphire blue chiffon cashmere trimmed with black, Wack hat; the Misses .James; Mrs. W. Raikes, dark blue silk, black chiffon hat; Mrs. Crawshaw, pale coral pink linen coat and skirt; Mrs. Porritt, white muslin with lace insertion, black hat; Miss Fussell, blue crepon, large straw ‘hat; Mrs. W. Webster, mauve silk costume; Miss Glynes, white silk, black hat; Miss Y. Glynes. black and white striped linen coat and skirt; Mrs. E. C. Robinson, lilac poplin, trimmed with laee on corsage, large hat; Miss Orbell, bis-cuit-coloured linen coat and skirt, large saxe blue hat; Mrs. Menzies, white cloth coat and skirt, large straw hat; Mrs. Capping, grey costume, white hat with roses, etc. The first prize was won by Mrs. Hogg; second, Miss Orbell; third. Mrs. S. Porritt: first “booby,” Mrs. T. C. Fookes; second, Mrs. G. Harrison. A Delightful Party. Mrs. Stubbs gave a delightful party on Wednesday evening. Bridge was played for part of the evening, then some music was indulged in. Amongst the guests were Mrs. Carey. Mrs. Badge, Mrs.' Raikes, Mrs. Uniacke. Mrs. Kimbell. Mrs. Rennell, Mrs. Robinson. Miss the guests were Mrs. Carey. Mrs. Budge, Uniacke, Baker, etc. Summer Sports. Nine of Stratford’s best croquet players went to Inglewood on Wednesday afternoon. to play the return match, the result being a'tie. The Stratford players were, Mrs. Munro, Miss Munro, Mrs. Wake, Mrs. Dingle, Mrs. C. Penn, Mrs. Hobbs. 82 all. The cricket match on Wednesday afternoon, between the local eleven and Hawera resulted in a win for the visiting club. Hawera 103. Stratford 70. On Thursday, owing to the bad weather, the howlers had to put oil their match with Inglewood. The sports in connection with the Bagley memorial .scholarship took place on Thursday afternoon, and owing to the heavy rain, the attendance was not as good as it otherwise would have been. Only twenty-three of the competitors turned up instead of forty nine. The •winner of the scholarship will not ‘be published till after the scholastic examinations. Personal. Mrs. Carey has left for -Hawera after a short visit to her brother, Mr. A. Vt. Budge. Mrs. Chapman, who has been stopping with Mrs. Raikes, has left for Welling--1 on. Miss J. Glynes is on a visit to her sister, Mrs. W. Webster.. Mr. Lyardet, of Wellington, has been visiting Stratford. Mrs. Curtis and her daughter. Mrs. McDiarmid have been the guests of Mrs. O. Curtis. Some youthful scholars have returned for the Xmas holidays. Miss Doris Menzies from New Plymouth, the Misses Pagel "from Auckland, the Misses Uniacke from Wellington, and Miss Zelda Hogg from Wellington, and Miss N. Malone.
