December 16. Students’ Recitals. Madame Lehmann’s students’ recital on Monday evening was most enjoyable. Mi«s AL Corskie delighted the audience with her delightful singing. Madame Lehmann must’ be congratulated upon the ■well-rendered programme given by her pupils, the large audience present being most appreciative. ,

Garden Party. Mrs. (Dr.) Tosswill entertained a large aud fashionable gathering of ladies at a garden party on Wednesday. Mrs. Tosswill’s fine residence and beautiful grounds are most adaptable to functions of this kind. The host and hostess received their gueets on the lawn, where afternoon tea and iees were served, after which a promenade over the lovely garden revealed to all -what a very successful horticulturist Mrs. Tosswill really is. Mrs. Tosswill (hostess) was exquisitely gowned in white silk ninon, beautifully worked with lace, hat of champagne straw garlanded with crimson roses; Mrs Lowry Acre a beautiful gown of black Roman satin, silk laee and insertion, and a sweet bonnet in blaek and white tones, handsonie blaek lace stole, completed a very elegant toilette; Mrs. Beamish, sen., also looked nice and was gowned in smart black silk and a very becoming bonnet of .blaek and touches of white: Mrs Nation wore a stylish mauve cloth, black silk stole and smart toque of pansy tones; Airs. Hassal, smart cloth coat and skirt of saxe blue, braided in darker tones, champagne straw hat, wreathed with roses; Mrs. Crosse, dark wedgwood blue silk Empire gown, black plumed hat; Alias Crosse. looked nice in blue floral muslin, with touches of pink, pretty hat of white chip, garlanded with roses; Aliss — Crosse looked sweet and girlish in white frock and Peter Pan collar, large 'hat with miniature flowers; Mrs. Ala son wore a striped brown cloth costume, lace stole, brown straw hat wreathed with tulle and flowers; Afrs Clarke looked niee in lettuce green linen eoat and skirt, white straw hat garlanded with roses. A very beautiful gown was worn by Mrs Nelson of dark purple silk; it was made in the trained hobble style, and was partially veiled! in black ninon, bordered with very handsome broad aluminium and steel insertion, large flop hat of chip and' plumes. Mrs Malcolm Brodie wore a girthed gown of pansy silk, very effective and quaint; Mrs Hector Smith wore a very choice toilette of blue satin veiled in hand-painted silk ninon, and girthed about the foot with a lavender sash, large black plumed hat; Airs Henley (Napier) wore a greatly adnfired- toilette; it was-a green and spotted silk, with high belt of Wack silk and girths of black, a particularly stylish black straw hat. Mrs G. Russell, dainty floral helio, silk muslin, lavender touches, smart black hat; Miss E. Williams looked dainty in white net and insertion Empire gown, smart large cream straw hat banded with red and black check straw; Airs Gaseoyne. black silk gown, black and white lace stole, stylish eream Leghorn hat. with bunch of ears of wheat; Mrs Reid, navy striped linen frock, burnt straw hat with crimson roses; Aliss Hewson looked exceedingly smart in black embroidered gown, lovely toque of chip and jet, with touches of white; Airs Brocklehurst, dainty white muslin, spotted and trimmed with blaek, cream straw hat trimmed with green chiffon and pink roses: Airs J. Aliller, graceful black silk, and jetted hat with fountain plumes; Airs J. Beamish, black silk gown, cream straw hat with lavender roses: Aliss McLean, smart frock of Copenhagen blue and white spotted silk, hobbled and trimmed with blue silk, smart black hat; Airs Braithwaite’s toilette was carried out in fuchsia tones and black; Airs Afurray, smart cigar brown linen coat and skirt, blaek trimmings, and a large black hat wreathed with white roses; Airs AlcLean (Havelock) was riehly gowned in soft blaek silk; Airs Jack Faulkner looked decidedly stylish and nice in an embroidered green linen, hat of roses aud foliage; Airs Evans looked very stately and nice in black whipeord silk, soft white chiffon bonnet; Aliss Evans, dainty white muslin, and Copenhagen blue hat with roses of a lighter tone; Mrs Beilby, a stylish gown of black and white muslin, black hat; Airs Landels looked very charming in grey linen coat and skirt, large wnite hat with roses; Airs Lanauze wore a very smart tailored costume of elephant grey, black plumed toque; Miss O. Seale looked sweet in a simple littlo frock of heliotrope with trimmings, and hat of cream; Aliss D. Lanauze looked very sweet and girlish in a frock of white lace and muslin, am! unbleached straw bucket hat with high bows of black silk; Afrs Fitzherbert wore a navy Liberty canvas coat and skirt, blue hat with crimson roses; Afrs ALiefarlanc, Wack brocaded gown, stylish black mushroom hat; Miss Afacfarlane looked very pretty in cinnamon silk striped voile, dainty hat lined and bunched with blue; Miss — Afacfarlane, rose voile trimmed

with silk, hat en suite; Mrs. Jones, smart fuchsia gown in the Princess style, soutache and a smart night and morning chip hat; Aliss Jones, Frock of tussore silk trimmed with pink vandykes and a sweet art hat crowned with moss and pink buds; Mrs. Sunderland wore a stylish helio and green plaid silk muslin, trimmed with pansy silk, large blaek plumed hat; Airs. .Symes looked well in black silk and blaek straw toque hat; Airs. Hurley, cream striped voile, pansy toque; Aliss B. Hurley wore a pretty cream froek, trimmed with insertion and a lovely little Kitty Bellairs hat of myosotis blue and pink roses; Afiss Dobbie, white frock, hat of burnt straw and Wack; Afrs. Banks, lovely floral muslin, trained gown, made very gracefully and trimmed with wide helio lace insertion, large French hat bunched with posies, helio ramblers; Afrs (Dr.) De Lisle wore a white gown, black laee scarf, and black plumed hat, which suited her remarkably well; Afrs. B. Chambers looked well in cream gown, with stylish black and white hat; Afrs. Lindsey looked nice in blue linen coat and skirt, black silk cuffs and revers, and smart hat' en suite; Airs. (Dr.) Nairn looked very graceful in cream silk voile, brown laee scarf, smart brown straw sailor, with tulle and flowers; Afrs. Fenwick, blue linen faced and buttoned with black, large cavalier hat of burnt straw; Mrs. Fannin, natural linen, faced with Mack, hat in same tones, with crimson roses; Mrs Gardiner, amethyst gown, hat en suite; Mrs. Newbigen, lavender gown, large hat en suite; Miss Newbigen, green embroidered linen, art hat of white; Mrs. Haise, embroidered muslin threaded with rose ribbon, maize straw hat, meta! trimmings; Afrs. (Dr.) Barcroft, lovely hand-painted chiffon gown over glace, moss velvet bands, large black hat; Mrs. Lewis looked stylish and elegant in a black gown, with very wide black merveilleux band at bottom of skirt, confining the upper draperies, which were trimmed with Wack silk insertion, large black chip hat, with tulle and aigrettes; Mrs. Scott wore a Chic new shade of green silk, frock very prettily constructed in pleats and tucks, low frilled collar of Paris lace, shoes en suite, and a bucket hat of cream straw, lined with a frill of lace, trimmed with roses and grasses; Mrs. H. Russel’s gown was very striking and pretty, constructed in the modish short style, the gown was of rose satin and veiled with black and white ibird’s-eye silk ninon, and trimmed with black velvet, lovely black hat and plumes; Mrs Warren wore a chic raw linen, banded with green and white spotted trimming, hat en suite; Airs. King looked particularly stylish and nice in a mauve serge gown, with pointed upper skirt braided In same shade, sleeves and yoke of gold filet net and mauve chiffon, smart hat of burnt straw, crimson roses and black stole: Afrs. Shields looked fresh and sweet in handsome cream Bengaline and black hat; Afrs. Kiely was delightful in palest aluminium and cigar-brown tones; Mrs. Cameron, pretty frock of quaint flowered silk, with shot chiffon trimmings, hat en suite. Others present were: Afesdames Douglas, Cooper, Cuthbert, Stronach, Baird, AfcKibbin, La wlor, McLeod, Smith, Alisses Nairn, Mason, Braithwaite, Fox, Svines, Smeitzer. Rainbow, and Smith. Personal. Aliss Hodge (Woodford House) returned to Hastinjv last night after a short holiday in England. Aliss Dobbie has gone to Auckland for a few weeks. Afrs H. Russel has returned from Wanganui. Afrs. Douglas Afurray has gone to Gisborne for the holidays. Airs. F. Cameron and her two daughters have gone to Masterton. Airs, and Aliss Ltickie have gone to their station for a few weeks. Colonel and Airs. Goring are spending a holidav in the Watrarapa district.
