Bartlett, photo. MR JOHN WILSON. Mr John Wilson, of the firm of Wilson’s Portland Cement Co., Ltd., was born at Kawau Island in 1846, his parents having arrived in New Zealand by the Duchess of Argyle on October 9th, 1842. In 1878 Mr. Wilson commenced business in Auckland, supplying the hydraulic lime made by his brother, Mr N. Wilson, at Warkworth. In 1883 the two establishments were amalgamated, and in 1902 the business was formed into a private limited company. In 1903 the public were admitted, and the company was given its present name. The manufacture of Portland Cement In marketable quantities was commenced in 1885, and the firm’s plant has now grown until It Is capable of producing about 40,000 tons per annum. In addition to the extensive works at Warkworlh, road metal, agricultural and plastering lime are produced at the Te Kuiti works, which are under the direct control of Mr J. Wilson. He was also one of the originators of the Morningside Quarries, Ltd., and is still connected with that firm. Mr Wilson has been an active member of the Industrial Association since its formation many years ago.
