October 7. Garden Party. Mrs. Newbigen'* garden party was exceptionally nice. It was a glorious day, and everybody seemed in most bouyant spirits. A string band was in attendance, and sumptuous refreshments were provided. .Shooting competitions, orangepelting, and fortune-telling were the amusements provided, and several wellrendered songs were sung. Mrs. New<bigen looked lovely, and received her guests in a lavender gown of simple doth, with lovely lace, and a picture hit with wings of the same tone; Miss Newbigen looked very dainty in a pretty frock of white embroidery, large white mushroom hat of tussore, festooned with tiny liaby roses over and under the brim; Miss Wylie (Wellington) wore a very handsome blue satin charmeuse robe witS lively cream guipure lace and dainty shoea en suits; Mrs. (Dr.) Macdoneli,

very stylish black gown and large black chiffon hat with plumes; Mrs. Lewis looked very handsome in a black cloth costume, large black hat- swathed with satin charmeuse; Mrs. (Dr.) Nairn looked elegant in light grey striped coat and skirt, hat en suite; Mrs. (Dr.) De Lisle, blue voile, cream trimmings, and very becoming black winged hat; Mrs. Chas. Scott, in a smart gown of black, large French chip hat; Mrs. J. Beamish wore a prettycool looking costume of pale blue, trimmed with bands of brown Oriental trimming, brown straw hat swathed with Paisley silk in both tones; Mrs. J. Faulkner, neat military blue costume, pretty liat of petrol colours; Mrs. J. Miller was looking particularly nice in black silk trained gown, transparent yoke and sleeves, lovely black jetted hat with fountain plumes; Mrs. Johnstone was looking very sweet and nice in military blue coat and skirt, hat of burnt straw with pink roses; Mrs. Fenwick looked handsome in black and white check coat and skirt, black trimmings, large black plumed hat. Others present were: Mesdames Cameron, Kiely, Haise, Cuthbert, Tosswill, Evans, Hurley, Fergusson, Clarke, Mason, Seale, Landels, MeKibbin, Reid, Lean, Misses Cuthbert (2), Lanauze, Smith, Miller, Peddie, Evans, Hurley, Rainbow, Drury, Symes, Dobbie. Hospital Ball.

The Hospital ball, although not a success financially, was most enjoyable. It was somewhat late in the season for dancing, and there being so many counter attractions, only about half as many attended as had been anticipated. The supper-room was beautiful, and the tables were very profusely and artistically arranged with long sprays of snowy blossoms and pate roses. Some of those present were: Mesdames J. Miller, A. McLean, Cross, De Lisle, Scott, Nairn, Haise, Newbigen, Mills (Christchurch), Clarke, Mason; Nelson, Beamish, Groll, Richmond, Macascy, Misses Cooper (3), Mason (2), Evans, Newbigen, Wylie (Wellington), Nelson, Mills (Christchurch), Smith, Sunderland.

Spring Race Meeting. Such a large concourse of people gathered together for the races on Wednesday and Thursday. The lawn was' perfect, and the lovely shady willows made a picturesque background to the ladies in their pretty frocks. One big featurg of the day was a champagne luncheon given to tlie’t'at'e officials, pfbrninent race members anil'friends of Mr. G. P. Donnelly, who was the successful candidate for the Hawke’s" Bay Racing Club’s presidency. Mrs. Perry (nee Miss Donnelly) presided as hostess, and looked lovely in a beautiful black gown. The bodice and tunic was of black silk applique, and soutache on black silk mesh, the underskirt of black silk. Her hat was a smart French type, the only colouring being tiny bunches of cerise pink verbena securing the black trimmings; about her shoulders was thrown a lovely Princess stole of turquoise blue charmeuse, trimmed with dark marabout, lined throughout with brown merveilleux and heavilyfringed with long chenille. On the second day Mrs. Perry wore another toilette of amethyst Directoire satin, handsomely braided. It was made with long French coat and skirt, lovely hat of amethyst satin straw, miniature flowers en suite, lined and brightened with pale blue most effectively; Mrs. Malcolm Brodie wore a cool green linen Russian coat and kilted skirt, collar of green silk rep., large hat of pale lavender straw with green trimmings and buckled with miniature lavender roses; ’ Mrs. Cross looked very" stylish and nice in mole cloth costume,, black and white hat; Miss Cross, white cloth costume, pretty straw hat garlanded with lovely pink silk 'roses; Miss —. Cross looked very pretty and girlish in a dainty white frock and Peter Pan collar, large hat decked with miniature flowers, and- on second day chic linen Costume piped with white; Miss E. Williams was wearing on first day a smart light grey tweed coatee and skirt,-smart dark mole hat banded with fur and two metallic quills, and on second day her gown was black with a dainty white bow; Miss Woolcontbe Boyce (England) first day was frocked in a pretty grey, much trimmed with handsome cream lace, large aniet'hyst satin hat, wings of same shade, and on second day her gown was of the newest style and most becoming, the foundation being a shot satin charmeuse of pale blue and gold veiled in ninon and trimmed with rich bronze gold insertion, large French hat of shot silk en suite with bunch of-black fountain plumes fastened up over one side of

the high crown; another lady who looked very elegant, was Mrs. C. Gordon, in a deep wedgwood blue and white striped silk gown, large stylish picture hat; Mrs. A’Deane wore a charming draped light tone petrol blue satin charmeuse, black gathered tulle hat with beautiful black feathers; Mrs. Landels looked sweetly pretty in cream voile with a lovely white silk hat veiled with black lace and thick garland of pink roses; Mrs. J. Beamish was gowned in a lovely pansy silk piped with black velvet, white lace yoke, white chip hat garlanded with lovely’ amethyst roses; Miss Lanauze, pretty rose linen frock with white lace yoke, lovely black chip hat with tulle and black plumes; Misses M. Mason wore pretty' frocks of blue and pink linen banded with Paisley ribbon, pretty large drooping hats garlanded with roses; Miss Newbigeri, dainty- shell pink gown embroidered, maize hat with miniature roses; Miss’—. Williams looked very sweet in a rose serge coat and skirt, winged hat of same colouring; Miss Turnbull (Dunedin), a graceful white crepe de chine, Oriental race cloak of sage, cloth, soutache in deeper tone, large black hat with white ostrich plumes; Mrs. Campbell, lovely gown of light and dark greenish tones, large hat trimmed with lovely silk roses and grasses; Miss Evans, becoming blue satin, with ninon overskirt and cream lace, large black hat trimmed with gold band and black feathers; Mrs. O. Scott,- smart black rep frock, broad width of black charmeuse at the foot of skirt, transparent yoke and sleeves of black tucked net and insertion, large French hat with long black plumes; Miss Tauner, black chiffon taffeta, stylish hat crowned with black tulle and caught with crimson verbena; Miss — Tauner looked sweet in chic coatee and skirt of cream serge, pretty white hat with pale blue flowers; Mrs. Nairn, who always looks so graceful and elegant, was wearing a caramel-brown toilette, Which suited her admirably; Mrs. J. Faulkner was looking particularly nice in a lovely cream silk bengaline with handsome lace trimmings and soft electric-blue hat with wings; Mrs. Macasey looked very nice in a smart heliotrope linen coat and skirt, art hat with colourings to match, and on the second day' she wore a delightful caramelbrown lace robe and silk stole, large hat of same colour; Mrs. Barcroft, smart navy charmeuse gown, figured with white, stylish black-plumed-“hat ; ' Sirs. Alex. Lean looked charmings in a stylish coatee and skirt- of white cloth and a large biack plumed hat;! Mi's. J. Miller, black silk taffeta gown, lace yoke and sleeves, cream silk stole, lovely black plumed hat; .Mrs. Douglas, pretty- rose blanket serge with black trimmings, hat garlanded with roses; Mrs. Wallace, stylish indigo coat and skirt, indigo hat with garlands of white roses. Others present were: Mrs. Mackersey, Mrs. Cuthbert (Christchurch), Mrs. Cuthbert (Paki Paki), Mrs. Kettle (Napier).
