HASTINGS.

September 16. Hastings has been very gay since I last wrote. We have had “The Girl from Rectors” ami three smart afternoon social functions, and invitations are issued for another on the 23rd. At the Show. I cannot attempt the numerous gowns worn at the afternoons, but as there were some new and pretty creations at the theatre, T will describe some of them. Airs Barcroft wore black net and jet trimmings over white silk, most effective; Aliss Barcroft, rose silk and Paris lace confection; Airs Braithwaite was wearing a lovely wallflower silk and marabout cloak; Aliss Braithwaite looked sweetly pretty in aeroplane blue silk, with silver trimmings; Aliss Williams was wearing a dreamy cloak of lilac silk, with white ostrich collar; Airs Nairn, a pretty high rose silk and cream lace; Aliss Evans looked nice in lemon satin, with crystal trimmings; Airs Beamish, smart rose cloth coatee; Mrs ('. Scott, coronation red satin ami gold: Airs Haise, high white silk; Aliss Shaw, black gown, touches of white; Mrs Newbigen looked nice in black and white; Airs Faulkner, in pink and white silk; Aliss AlcLean; Airs Douglas, pink silk; Airs Johnston looked very winsome in black and cream; Aliss Dull’, lovely Venetian green satin cloak; Mrs J. Aliller, black silk and lace; Airs Peddie, black gown; Airs (Dr.) De Lisle, most becoming gown of black silk and jet, white tucker; Airs Alurray, very pretty midnight blue cloak, with white facings. Others present were: Alesdames Richmond!, Beyers, Clarke, Gregory, McLeod, Kiely, Stronach, Lawlor, McKibbin, Alisses Alason, Nairn, ATackersey, Well-

wood, Wylie (Wellington), Aforris Alason, Afessra Barcroft* Faulkner Evans, McKibbin, Beamish (2), Alacker sey, Douglas, Well wood. McKenzie, Dr De Lisle, Johnston, Richmond, McLeod Gregory. Afternoon Tea. Airs Haise (Bank of New Zealand) gave a very large and smart function in Ngaturi Tea Rooms, which had been turned into a veritable. Hower bower. the colours chosen being white sprays of American may, lilies, ami pink camellias. Airs Haise looked sweet and dainty in blue silk, handsome cream lace, and a becoming hat of pink floral silk. The arrangements were carried out most delightfully. Alusie. songs ami recitations were indulged in, also two very interesting competitions, the first being celebrities, and the second a flower wedding. Airs Newbigen was presented with a framed picture, and Miss Baird a beaten copper photograph frame, for the celebrity prizes; and Mrs Reid and Airs Brodie won the Hower wedding. Among the guests 1 noticed: Mesdames Miller, Hurley, Ferguson, Scott, Evans. Beamish, Banks, Alurray, Wallace, McKibbin. Macdonell, Tosswill, Newbigen. Brodie, Reid, Cuthbert, Lane, Gregroy, Gascoyne, Barcroft, Baird, White, De Lisle. Misses Baird, Newbigen, Evans, Wylie, Kelly (2), Cuthbert, Drury. Daffodil Tea. Airs D. Seannell also gave a lovely little “Daffodil Tea” on the same day, many of the guests going to both functions. Alagnilieent daffodil blooms in beautiful vases decorated the drawingroom. and everything was carried out in daffodil colouring, the hostess’ gown of silk being very sweet. Some of those present wore: Alesdames Barcroft. Nairn. De Lisle, Tosswill, Gascoyne. Rochfort, Beamish, 1 lolderness, Lewis. B. Chambers, Goring’. Cooper, besidesmany others. At Home. Airs Malcolm Brodie gave a small “At Home” last Friday. Songs were sung by Alesdames Brodie. ATcKibbin. Miller, Murray. Misses Newbigen and Wylie, and Aliss Wylie gave a recitation. A flower competition was indulged in. Mrs Reid being the prize-winner. Afternoon te;f and cakes were afterwards dispensed!. Airs Brodie looked nice in pansy silk. Some of those present were: Mesdames Murray. Wallace. Banks. McKibbin, Newbigen, Reid. Haise, Alisses Newbigen, Wylie, and others. Personal. Airs (Dr.) Fosswill has returned from Alarton. Airs Robinson (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs Douglas (Te Alahinga). SHEBA.
