TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The Wellington Meeting has robbed Riccarton stables of their principal representatives, but there are still many horses making use of the tracks, and It looks as if Riccarton will be exceptionally well represented in the hunters’ events and minor flat races at the Grand National Meeting. Unfortunately, the weather shows no disposition to become settled, and trainers still find very great difficulty in securing proper facilities for exercising their charges. It is stated that Wimmera is a sure starter for the Winter Cup. and he is likely to carry a substantial backing. Tyrannic has arrived at Riccarton from the North Island with a view to fulfilling his engagements at the Grand National Meeting. White Cockade's recent victories have brought him into prominence for the Grand National Hurdles, and a good deal of business is said to have been done. The son of Finland by Miss Loehiel has won good races on the flat, but was somewhat inconsistent. His recent form, however, shows him up in more attractive colours, and it is by no means improbable that he wilt go out favourite for the big hurdle race at Riccarton. The nominations for the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s August Meeting are large and thoroughly representative, and some good racing may be expected, but the club Is still suffering at the hands of the clerk of the weather. The recent rains have retarded the improvements to the ground so seriously that it is now improbable that the club will be able to race on its own course Id August.
