PERSONAL NOTES.

Dr. J. D. Campbell Dunean, of Christchurch, has been appointed surgeon to the Coromandel Hospital and medical officer to tbe local Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, in succession of Dr. Stanley Smith. Detective J. Fahey, who was some time back transferred to Timaru from Auckland, has been made the recipient of a handsome silver tea and coffee service as a mark of the esteem in which he is held by the members of the Auckland police force.

Mr. Bruce Lewis was at New Plymouth last week presented with a leather suit-case, with inscribed presentation plate, by the staff of Messis. Sargood, Son and Ewen. Mr. Lewis, who was for some years attached to the Auckland staff, severs his connection with the firm at the end of the month to take up a position as the North Island representative of Messrs. Copestake, Campton and Co., of Manchester. Mr. H. N. Holmes, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A., Wellington, has received a personal letter from Mr. C. Carter, secretary of the Evangelisation Society of Australasia, saying that all the invitations from the States and the Dominion for Dr. Chapman and Mr. Alexander to visit Australia and New Zealand have now been received, ami tae formal invitation is being forwarded to Dr. Chapman. The evangelists propose to begin their campaign about April, 1912. The appointments of Mr. G. F. C. Campbell to be Commissioner of Taxes, Mr. C. R. C. Robieson to be general manager of the State Fire Insurance Department, and Mr. B. Wilson to be director of the Tourist division, are to take effect almost immediately, that is to say, from the end of the present month. It is generally assumed that no appointment will be made to fill Mr. Wilson's present position as Registrar of the Arbitration Court, the work of the Court having very greatly decreased during the last year or so. Major Lascelles, who came to the Dominion three years ago to fill the postion of Chief Instructor of Mounted Services and was recently appointed (temporarily) Director of Military Operations and Intelligence, is at present on leave. His term of service is just about to expire and he is understood to be leaving for the Old Country shortly. -He holds a captain’s commission in H.M. 3rd Dragoon Guards and will rejoin his regiment. Major Lascelles served in South Africa with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles from 1900 to 1902. He wears the Queen’s medal with four clasps and the King’s medal with two clasps. District Commander A. Piugge of the Auckland Boy Scouts, was last week prevented, by Dr. Makgill, Commissioner for the North Island, with a pair of field glasses as a personal tribute on the occasion of Commander Plugge’s approaching marriage. Mr. Henry Jackson, who is retiring from the employ of Mr. Geo. Smerdon after 14 years’ service, has been presented with a handsome saddle-backed armchair bearing a silver plate suitably inscribed, by Mr. Smerdon, and with a silver-mounted pipe and umbrella by his fellow employees. The marriage was solemnised at Bowden, Cheshire (England) last week of Mr. Norman Barker, second son of Mr. J. L. Barker, to Miss Rhoda Grace Bodie, youngest daughter of Mr. Frank Bodie, manager of the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. at Auckland. A farewell supper and dance was tendered by the nursing staff of the District Hospital, Auckland, to ChargeNurses Clark and Tebbnt, Staff-Nurses Allan, Coates, and Wallis, and Nurses Fraser and Smith, who are leaving to take up private nursing or to accept other appointments. A very pleasant gathering took place

last week at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ballantine, "Eden View,” Epsom, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. The membe.s of the family all assembled for the occasion, and Mr. and Mrs. Ballantine were the recipients of presents suitable to the event, as well as many congratulatory telegrams. The caretaker of Pitt-street Wesleyan Church, Mr. Wilkinson, was last week presented with an illuminated address, an easy chair, and a small purse of gold, on his retirement from the position after over 40 years’ service. Mr. J. Edson and Mr. S. J. Ambury made the presentation, and a number of church office-bearers made complimentary reference to Mr. Wilkinson’s serviced.
