Tasman, the Dutch navigator, was the first navigator who saw the land and mountain in December, 1642. Not again until January !“-• *J the place until when the New Plymouth Company established a colony at Waltara, near New Plymouth, purchasing 50,000 acres from the natives and bringing out British emigrants J as late as 1880, that troops from other parts of New Zealand, landed under the mountain.
