April 10. Tennis Parties. FAREWELL parties have been the order of the past week. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Holmes have been the guests of honour, and as they are both so keen on tennis, it is according to the fitness of things that these functions should be tennis parties. On Thursday afternoon, Mrs. W. R. Bloomfield gave a jolly party on her lawn, which, in spite of the rainy morning, was playing well. There was quite a little “edge” on the afternoon-, the wind was from the south—just. enough to give us all a keen appetite to enjoy the delicious home-made cakes and sandwiches. Our hostess was wearing a white linen skirt, white silk blouse, and a green hat wreathed with black grapes and leaves; Miss Hilda Bloomfield, a blue crepe frock and a very becoming big white hat draped with black velvet; Mrs W. R. Holmes, blue striped lustre fared with black, a very smart tricorne hat of black and gold straw, with Battier blue wing; Mrs. Richmond looked sweet in a white tennis frock, burnt straw hat with blue drape; Mrs. E. Horton, white tucked cambric and a heliotrope hat and waist band; Mrs. Edmunds, peacock blue cloth braided with black, large black hat; Miss Walker (Brisbane), heliotrope and white delaine, burnt straw hat with brown velvet band; Miss Ida Thompson was a dainty girl in white, threaded with pale pink ribbon, large black hat draped with black velvet: Miss Marjorie Towle looked pretty in white linen and a nattier blue hat with black: Mrs. Borthwick: Miss G. An interest ing final was played in the earlv afternoon between Mrs. \V. R. Bloomfield and Mr. Grigson against Miss Cooper and Mr. Pavitt, the latter pair winning. Several other interesting games were played, and a jolly afternoon came all too quickly to an mid. A delicious afternoon tea was served in the club house, and much enjoyed. Dining thu tea adjournment, Mr. Simpson, on behalf of the men of the club, prcf-mted Mr. Holmes with a han'tsome leather bag. In a short, bright speech, Mr. Holmes thanked the donors. Golf. The opening of the Waitemata golf season was a very jolly outing for those who went from Auckland. It was just delight! ul crossing the harbour, and when we were coming home the harbour wa.- a perfect picture, and just alive with sailing craft. W'e saw the finish of an exciting race; and when the yachts turned and sailed down the harbour in the sunset glow tin* effect was very beautiful. We watched the various competitors in the foursomes, and saw some good golf—likewise some bad; and. of course, like nio-t onlookers do. we thought how much better we could have done.
