ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

Sportscuaa, Whan gamut a.— Yes. Octoroon started in the Welcome Hurdle Race at the Auckland Fled Race Meeting. Sport, Parnell.—There were four starters, •Cuneiform, Multifid, Glen-owlet, and Apol- • itmiris. Cuneitorm won, with Multifid and \ Glen-owlet a dead heat for second. Dividends v. ere paid out on Cuneiform, Multifid aud Gleno-wlet. The gelding Fen fold Is now under P. Conway'to charge at Ellerslie. The f’yrenian horse Camlirian was shipped t® s'.v Iney on Monday by the Maheso. Sir Geo. Clifford has sod Full Sail to Bn Australian buyer, and the gelding will be ship.pt>a by an early steamer. W, Toxer has had an addition to his Btrtng in a well grown four yearold gelding by Bl w*4 ig 111 --Co ry ph ee. Owing t-> fhe death of J. B. Williamson, General Sou-11 has been removed to Pa-pa-kura, and has gone into H. Frencli’s charge. There is a probability of Norval, the sire of MswiarHue and Grampian,. being secured by a local owner. The Au- kland horses Aim well and Maykoff are still coni pc ting without success at the smaller SomWria meetings. Tin- Wanganui Cup winner of 1909, Sir I‘iize is to be given a l-.-ug spell, and may aot be raced again till the spring. Poxes have been engaged at the Harp of Erin by J. 11. Master Soult is still a regular attendant O’; I .'r fcs KJ lei but, so far, .his tasks h.a' e been of a very ordinary character. Salute and Maori King are n-»w equal favourites lor the Easter Handicap with Master Soult and 1 ady Medallist next in request. Master soult. Salute, Taiiu inupo, and Advocate ar-? the Auckland nominations for the pritt-apial events at the Wellington Bacing ( Lab’s autumn meeting, Mr. E. W. AINon has been appointed to represent the Au<*klam| Metropolitan Committee at the hearing of the appeal lodged by B. D<’el.ey, which ■••.uues off at Wellington next mouth. Private in forma tie© received in Auckland slnl<‘s that (he Chain pa g i*e Stakes candidate GoM trader is getting through good work, ■ud will strip a much better colt than he was in Lite summer. Owing to Friday, the 25th insf., being a general holiday, ikuruulmum for the whole of the event’s at the A vwiteLile J.C. au'tumn sweeting close with the secretary (Mr. 11. ffl-ayr) uu Thursday, the 24 th lust. In addition to the horses engaged In the principal events, the Auckland horst's Ex pkwu’vr and Aim well appear among the uomioai't ixkus for the mwor races at the Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting. The -'Hit hern horsemen. W. Young and ®. Reid, have been spending a holiday In Auckland. It is understood th? last-named will have the mount on Goldtinder In the biortheru Champagne Makes. The victory of Explosive In the OMnemurl Cup Is the most imjiortnul yet gained by the son of Explosion If the time (2.9) returned Is correct. Explosive ivae re puii■Ude for a good performance.

Mr A. G. Mabee has broken in tire Gluten — Soult Rose filly purchased at the last Gleuera I’ark sale. She is a beautifully even tempei ed filly, and has filled out wonderfully since she was so id. Mr W. Montgomeiy did not have to wait long to g*»t back part of the money he expended ou the purchase of Ne-ius, the son of Nestor winning the Komata Handicap on the opening day of the Ohinemuri meeting. A useful sort of a pony, in Taka, was seen out at the Helensville meeting. Taka, which is by Takapuna — Hippocampus mare, comes from the same family as Relle (and other good ones owned by the Messrs Duder. The Patronus filly Patricia was made very hot stuff for 4he Hack Race at the Thames meeting, but the best she could do was to run second to Heta. The latter is a gelding by Seaton Del-aval —Cressy, and is owned by the Thames trainer J. Twohill. The Advance mare Equit as has been supported for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap from Hie right quarter, and she has shortened in price for that event. Equitas was also coupled in doubles with Waione for the hurdle lace. Word from the South states that It is unlikely any of the Porirua-trained horses will be seen out at the A.R.C Autumn Meeting. Three boxes, however, have been engaged at the Harp of Erin on behalf of J. 11. Prosser. P. McLaughlin returned on Thursday with Tarina and Miss Advance, after an unsuccessful tour in the South. Miss Advance was uulucky in not scoring on one of two occasions, but Tarina failed to show anything Like her true form. *]Tie victory of Maori King in the St. Patrick's Handicap, on the concluding day of the Napier I’ark Autumn Meeting, does not earn him a penalty for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. Maori King is now practically favourite for the Ellerslie mile event. Besides Bobrik off and Downfall, there Is another horse engaged in the Doncaster and •Sydney Cup to which there is a N.Z. interest. This is Plunder, which figures in both races, and which is jointly owned by Messrs. W. Ryan (the Auckland penciller) and F. McGrath, (the -Sydney trainer). The Menscliikoff gelding 'Electrakoff had his seqU’Cttce of wins disturbed at the Thames meeting, when the best he could do was to run third in the Railway Handicap. after finishing out of a place in the Autumn Stakes. Electrakoff is stated to be suffering from a cold, and may not have been seen at his best. The Hon. J. D. Ormond has evidently a useful colt in Birlrdalo, by Birkenhead -- Thame, which accounted for both the two-year-old races at the recent Napier Park meeting. Birkdale is the sole representative of the Napier sportsman in the Great Northern ChanapagAe Stakes. The Ben Godfrey gelding Pukenui. which lias been off the scene for some time, made his reappearance at the Helensville meeting on Thursday last, being saddled up for the Helensville Handicap in which he Si: d '3.2. Fukenui was in front for about half the journey, when his condition failed him, and be was the last to finish. The Av-vudale Jockey Club advertise the programme for their Autumn Meeting, which takes place on April 9 and 13. Owing t<? Friday, the 25th inst.. being a close holiday, entries for all events will done with the secretary (Mr LT. H. ITayr) on the previous day (Thursday), the 24tk lust., at 9 p.m. New Z<uilanders generally will Lie pleased nt the suceen of Bebrikoff in the Rawson Stakes. Tl*e crack gelding does not appear to have had any very solid opposition in the event, but by his showing it its evident that he ha.', gone on all right since landing iu AutslraHa. and his prospects of victory at the forthcoming A.J.C. Autumn Meeting are certainly very bright. At the annual meeting of inemWrs of the Otaniatca Raring (.’lab. forty members were present, and evinced a lively interest In the proceedings. The balance-sheet shsrwed a creditable state of affairs. Mr Nerman Finlayson was elected president, and an energetic emnmittee were appointed. The commit toe were empowered to arrange a programme for the next race meeting, and to increase the stakes by £2O. A West Australian buyer took a shipment of thoroughbred sto-rk away with him by the Mahpnn ec Monday. The lots included the horse ('uirasimon, by Cuirassier Miss Simon, and a half sister to (Siiraslmon, by

the rich te [treat

Gbllgado, a three and a four year-old filly, both by Soult— MieK Nelssn, aud a four-year-old mare by Measchikoff — Apparition. It is stated that the price paid to Mr D, McKinnon for Cuirasimon was 600 gs.

The following remarks by “Sentinel,'' in reference to Mr H. Piper’s starting, apply with equal force to other starters in the Dominion:—“Mr 11. Piper is rightly regarded as a very capable starter, but he frequently appears to make the fault of going too much amongst the horses when they are lining up at the barrier. And. as .1 result, i<(» is sometimes not in a position to accept the opportunity of making a good aud early start. Mr Piper, with the best intentions in the world, allows himself to teach horses a lesson that should he given thorn bv their trainers and riders. The best and rmist convincing way to teach traiuens and riders the Importance of having the manners of the horses all right is to leave one or two of them. Mr Piper would then soon discover it would not be necessary for him to usurp the work of the trainer and rider.

At the Allendale Stock Farm’s (Melbourne) sale of trotters and pacers last week 64 lots were sold, realising 7598 J guineas. The following were bought for New Zealand : —Grattan Abbey, b. colt, sire Abbey Bells (imp.), dam Blonde Grattan (imp.). 185gns; Elsie Downs (imp.), b.m., sire Boodle, 2.12, dam Lynda Oak, 2.18, 2<>ogns; Jewel Chimes, 2, f., sire Abbey Bells, dam Jewell’s Heiress, 170gns; Twinkle Chimes, 3, f., sire Abbey Rells, dam Twinkle, lOOgns; Grattan Chimes, 2, f., sire Abbey Bells, dam Blonde Grattan, 275gns ; Golden Bells, 3, f., sire Abbey Bells, dam Golden Eagle, 35gns; Hal Zolock (imp.), 4, b.h., sire Zolock, 2.05 i, dam Belle Pointer, 450gns ; Pawn Bells, f., sire Abbey Bells, 45gns ; Eaglette, 25gns; Weanling Filly, sire Marvin Wilkes (imp.). 2.125. F ’

The lots coming to Auckland are Grattan Abbey (yearling colt), full brother to the champion, Grattan Bells, which as a two-year-old trotted a winning mile in 2.29, a record for Australasia. Grattan Abbey Is described as a handsome dark chestnut line trotter, and should also prove a champion. Both his sire and dam were imported from America, and are bred from the best, the former Abbey Bells being by that great sire Bow Bells, which has 15 In the 2.10 list, and has sired 55 with records better than 2.30. Abbey Belts’ dam, Russia, is by Harold, and is full sister to the famous Maud S., which still holds the world's record to high-wheel sulky, 2.8|. Blonde Grattan, the dam of Grattan Abbey, is by Grattan, 2.13, which has sired 95, with records better than 2.30. Average, 2.G, including Gratt 2.2 A, Baron Grattan 2.35, Doris B. 2.55, R. Grattan 2.75, Palmyer Boy, 2.75. Nutwood Grattan 2.75. Auckland is to be congratulated on having secured such a richly-bred youngster, and which with age should prove a valuable sire fur improving the breed of the light harness horse. Auckland is also to be the future home of the imported American horse, Elsie Downs (line trotter), by Boodle, 2.12, dam Lynda Oak, 2.18. She is the dam of Alto Downs, which took a record in America of 2.17$ as a two-year-old. She now has a foal at foot, by Marvin Wilkes (imp.), 2.125, and is in foal to him again. At a meeting of the Metropolitan Committee List week (Mr 11. T. Gorrie in the chair), the following licenses were granted:—Trainers: Win. Cook and John Williamson. Jockeys: W. 11. Mobberley, Alex. Mitchell, and (’. IT. Percival. Apprentice jockeys: J. B. O’Shea and V. B. Collins. The programme of the Papakura Racing Club for April 1G was approved. The A.R.C. There was no rain, but a strong southerly wind made matters very unpleasant. The attendance was fair, but the’-c were nut so many visitors us was expected. So strong was the wind that a large refreshment marquee on the ground was blown to ribbons, and the refreshments and crockery inside were scattered all over the place. The racing was fairly interesting, but for the most part the first or second favourite was successful. The stewards were kept busy, and during the afternoon •they had to consider a question raised In connection with Taka’s victory in the Maiden llaudleap. It being claimed that he was ineligible for the event, having won races at polo sports. After consideration the stewards ordered the bookmakers to pay out on Taka, and impounded the stakes. The running of Rob the Ranter in the Flying Handicap was questioned, and after hearing the statement of his rider (E. Pope) the inquiry was adjourned. After the Last race 1 protest was entered by the rider of Lloyds agji'inst Tn! Kltua being declared the winner, on the ground that he had run inside a post, the protest being dismissed. Had an objection been lodged that the race was started before time it must have been.

upheld, for the rule is very emphatic on the point. In the race under notice the horses were started at six minutes to 5, the advertised time being 5 o’clock. With the exception that the stewards failed in their duty in not ordering this race to be rerun, and the fact that no official times were taken, the gathering was well condocted, the arrangements of the secretary (Mr. J. Pine has arrived with Count Witte, and will Yesterday there was some fairly interesting work. Kilwinning galloped a mile on the plough in 1.50. and Ftitaway and Madnm Madcap left six furlongs behind in 1.18 25. The Oaks winner, Ingoda, did nn attractive gallop, leaving the mile ami aquarter post slowly, but running home the last mile iu 1.13, and flulshhig well. Prim

galloped nine furlongs on the grass in 2.0 2 5. the last mile occupying 1.47 25. Gwendolina moved attractively, leaving a mile and a-quarter behind in 2.14; to-day she (•ok charge of her featherweight rider, and traversed three circuits on the tan at a strong pace, but she did not appear to be distressed. The Wahnate Racing Club’s Meeting yesterday was the most successful the rliib has had. the attendance being a record for the course, and the sport being exceedingly interesting. The principal event, run over a mile and a distance, furnished a great struggle between Crnnst.tdt anil Ruse No’de, the former making a tine run in the straight to win by half a length. Croneitadt, whirb is a three-year-nhl colt by Stepniak Madder, and therefore a full brother to those illustrious performers All Red and Minijeet, lias come on since the Dunedin meet Jig’ when his best effort was his second in the Jockey Club Handicap. The well hro<l mare Cute, by Stepniak Decoy, showed up attractively, winning a double in good style, and beating some very useful horses. Mr J. Buckley's St. Aidan has evidently dropped his schooling over fences, as it v» is suggested he would, and he beat a fair field convincingly in a seven furlong race. The Birkenhead Stepfeldt horse Gravitation, who was the only repn smta five of th? Walrarapa sportsman Mr \V. E. Bidwell In the Eighteenth Challenge Stakes, has gone amiss, and will not be a starter at the autumn meeting at Riccarton. It. is reported that Messrs W. G. and G. L. Stead are dissatisfied with the treatment recently accorded Ihe?r English bred mare Ringdove by handicappers, ami they propose to end her racing career at once, and send ■her to the stud. She claims no engagement ♦ at the C.J.C. Autumn Meeting. Sir Geo. Clifford has sold the three-year-old gelding Full Sail, by I‘ilgiim's Progress — Windwhistle, to a patron of I. Foulsham’s stable, and he was shipped for Melbourne by the Moeraki yesterday in charge of R. The Dunedin Jockey Club proposes to proceed at once with the erection of the new stewards’ stand at Wingatui. The general plan of the building is similar to that of the Riccarton stand. Napier reports state that the steeplechaser El Dorado is to be put into commission again. At the Grand National meeting last year the Gold Reef gelding won much admiration when he ran second to Nadador in th»‘ Grand National Steeplechase a nd wou the Beaufort and Lincoln SteepleThe steeplechase course at Wingatui is being improved with a view to the D.J.C. winter meeting in Juno. The Southland Trotting Club’s inaugural meeting was distinctly encouraging to the followers of the light harness sport in the far south. The club gave 250sovs in stakes for six events, the fields were fairly larpe, and the sport was good, and the club is left with a profit in hand. As Equdtas has not been accepted for the Mangaone Stakes at Feilding, she is being heavily supported for the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton. Sir Prize, who pulled up lame after running in the Egm out Cup last month, is now enjoying a spell, and may not be raced again until the spring. It is understood that there is some little difference over the ownership of Gold Bird, and that the stake which the horse won at Wanganui has been impounded pending a settlement of the difference. c FEILBING ACCEPTANCES.
