Beautifying Paris.
Most of us who have visited the Ville Lumiere think Paris quite handsome enough as she is, but thirty-six million pounds is going to be spent on the beautifying of the city during the next eigh-
teen years: so that, wherever she may be now, it is certain that she should be incomparably finer and healthier in the year 1928. The sad part of the new
scheme is that it involves the destruction of a good deal of the Old Paris that
had survived the great revolution, tho minor cataclysms of the last eentury, and the energies of the good Baron Haussmann. Historic landmarks have
their educational value, and their disappearance spells loss in more ways than one. The sinking of new wells, however, and the provision of purer water, the broadening of streets, and the erection of new schools, markets, hospitals; workmen’s dwellings, and abattoirs will result in a practical compensation for the loss of picturesqueness.
