December 31. Christinas Eve. On Christmas Eve Airs. Stead gave a children’s afternoon party at Strowan Park. All sorts of delights were prepared for the little guests. l The chief one was a grand Christmas tree, hung with presents of all kinds, which were distributed after tea. A number of grownups were present, who enjoyed themselves as much as the children did. A very happy time was spent in the lovely garden. The hostess was wearing a gown of black crepe de ehine and lace; her daughter, Airs. Russell Grace (Wellington), a white linen embroidered costume, white hat with roses. Amongst, the guests were: Airs. Boyle, in a dark grey costume, with black and white hat; Airs. .1. D. Hall, cream Shantung eoat and skirt, black hat; Airs. Wigram, a pale blue costume, hat with shaded roses; Airs. Denniston, a linen costume, with black hat: Aliss Denniston, dark blue linen coat and skirt, dark blue hat to match; Airs. Henry Wood, pink and white striped linen costume faced with black, black hat with pink rose; Airs. Bullock (Dunedin), coat and skirt of mauve linen, hat to match; Aliss N. Reeves, a striped linen dress, white hat with black velvet; Airs. Fosbery Nancarrow, frock of white, embroidered muslin, white hat with yellow roses; Mrs. Allen, costume of vieux rose Shantung, dark blue hat, with shaded roses; Miss Ogle, cream Shantung frock with wide insertions of guipure lace, and touches of pale blue, large hat with pale blue ribbon bows; Airs. Afolineaux, dark grey costume, black hat; Miss Alolineaux, white muslin frock, white hat with roses; Aliss Al. Alolineaux, froek of helio trope muslin, hat to match; Miss Cowlishaw, striped flannel coat and skirt, pale blue ha t; Airs. T. Cowlishaw, blue crepe de chine dress, blue and black hat; Airs. Palmer, black satin dress, black hat with pink rosebuds; Miss Humphreys, coat and skirt of light grey Shantung, pink linen hat; Miss A. Humphreys, green Shantung froek, black hat; Miss Fisher, a black gown with mauve toque. Garden Party. A small garden party was given by Airs. Philip Hamner at Fendalton on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Hanmer •wore a black crepe de chine and lace gown, with black and white, hat. Amongst the guests were: Airs. John Deans, Airs. George Hanmer, the Missea Hanmer, Airs, and Miss Cook, Mrs. A. Murray-Avnsley, Mrs. E. Ross, Mrs. Dixon, Airs. E. Turrell, Miss Peters, the Mieses Prins (2), Nedwill, Gresson (2), Higgins, Gerard. Tipping, Messrs. Archer. Wilson and Nedwill. River Picnic. A river picnic was given on Thursday evening bv Mrs. Thomas. The guests included: The Misses Moore (2), Symes, Wilson, Milne and Merton, Messrs. Anderson, Nanearrow, Denniston, and some of the officers of H.M.s. Challenger. Personal. Invitations have been sent out by. Airs. Ehrenfrred (Auckland) for the marriage of her daughter, Aliss Lucie Ehrenfried, to Air. Cecil Louisson (Christchurch). The ceremony will take place at the Synagogue on Tuesday, January 4th, and the reception will be bold in the Art Gallery, Christchurch. Visitors to Christchurch include: Mrs and Aliss Buller (Auckland), Dr. Gillon (Auckland), Mrs. and Aliss Caro (Auckland), Mr Leo Myers (Auckland). Airs. Dunean Cameron (Springfield) has been staying with Mrs Pyne (Bealey Avenue) • Mrs. Bullock (Dunedin) is the gnest of Mrs. Henry Wood (Avonside) ; Mrs. W. Perry (Petone) is the guest of Airs. George Rhodes (Meadowbank) ; Air. and Airs. A. Fenwick (Dunedin) are staying with Mrs. Fenwick (Montreal-street). Alias Hill (Christchurch) has left for Singapore, where her marriage to Mr. Ger,r|d Bowen, son of tire Hon. U. C. Bowen, is to take place. ■' Air. and Airs. John Studholme, of “Coldstream” (Ashburton) also left for Singapore. Mr. and Airs. Gerald Stead (Christchurch) are spending a few weeks in Napier. Professor Blunt, Mrs. Blunt, and family (Christchurch) have gone to Mt. Peel, where they have taken a cottage for the holidays. Miss Thomas (Christchurch) is staying with Mrs. Donald McLean, Mount Hutt.

Professor and Mrs. Cook intend lea** ing Christchurch shortly to reside in Marton.
