December 24. A Dance. A very successful dance was given on Monday- night at “Te Whare” Assembly Rooms by a committee of girls. Mrs. Deans wore a black corded velvet gown, relieved with old lace; Mrs. Thomas, pale grey silk grenadine with silver sequin trimming; Mrs. Hanmer, pale blue taffetas; Mrs. Wanklyn, black satin and touches of pale blue; Mrs. DampierCrossley, black and white gown; Mrs. Murray, black brocaded satin; Mrs. J. The Misses 'Moore gave a very enioyable tennis party on Wednesday-after-noon at S. Alban’s, the guests including Misses Denniston. Symes. Thomas. Humphyeys and Wilding. Messrs. Harper, Sharland. Preston and several officers of H.M.s Challenger On Saturday afternoon Mrs. Loughnan gave a very pleasant tennis party. Among those present were: Mr. and Mrs.

Ingle, Mr. and Mrs. C. Ollivier, Mr. and Miss Cook, Mrs. Boyes, Mrs. F. Nancarrow, and Misses B. Wood, Wilson, Campbell, Murray, and Lucas. Afternoon Tea. Afternoon tea was given by Mrs. Wilding at “Fawnhope,” Opawa, as a farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Cobham, who are leaving Christchurch for Western Australia. Those present were: Mrs. Julius, Miss Julius, Mrs. and Miss Denniston, Mrs. J. C. Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rhodes, Mrs. and Miss Symes, Miss Wells (Amberley), Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Andrew Anderson, Miss Anderson, Mrs. T. Cowlishaw, Messrs. Gadley, Anderson (2), Bartrop, Fell, and Dr. Nedwill. A Fancy Dress Dance. A fancy dress dance was given by Miss Cox, at “Te Whare” assembly rooms, as a breaking-up party to her pupils. Some of those in fancy costumes were: Miss C. Grigg, queen of hearts; Miss M. Grigg, queen of clubs; Miss Knight, French cook; Miss R. Knight, Italian peasant; Miss Payne, Swiss peasant; Miss B. Payne, dairymaid; Miss N. Knight, early English; Miss D. Hanmer, early Victorian; Miss F. Robinson, Grace Darling; Miss L. Robinson, fuschia; Miss K. Line, tambourine dancer; Miss I). Dudding, rainbow; Miss E. Helmore, powder and patches; Masters Bell, Hayter and Douglas were courtiers; J. G. and A. Grigg, stockmen; J. Turnbull, Puritan; D. Boys and H. Prins, Dutchmen: H. Helmore, barrister; and several others. Also present, were; Mrs. Cox, Mrs. Moreland, (Mrs. Newton, Mrs. Boys, Mrs. Johnstone, Mrs. Dampier-Crossley; Mr. and Mrs. J. C. N. Grigg (Longbeach), Mr. and Mrs. J. Vernon, Mrs. Lane, Misses Rose (2) and Merton, Messrs. Murray, Gorton, Holmes, Norton (2), Westenra, Gibson, Murray, and Menzies. Xmas Party. A Christmas party was given on Friday evening by Mrs. J. Cracroft Wilson and her children at “Cashmere.” Mi's. Wilson ■received her guests in the drawing-room.

C. N. Grigg, Professor and Mrs. Blunt, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred WaT, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Knight, Misses Bathgate (Dunedin), Prins (2), Gossett, Cocks, Cooke, Pyne, Hanmer, and Grigg; Messrs Harper, Hall, Stringer, Hartrop, and Robinson. Dancing took place in th" hall and the drawing-room. The flora’ decorations were beautifully carried on' with geraniums and sweet peas. Anrldai great surprise and delight, Mrs. Wibon » son rode through the room on his tin’’ ponv, and distributed Christmas gifts to his little friends during the dancing. Personal. Mr. and the Misses Sanders (Christchurch) have gone to Auckland for the holidays. Mrs. J. C. Wilkin and Mr. A. W lkiu (Auckland) are spending a few weekin Christchurch. Major and Mrs. Hutton have return to Christchurch from Rotorua. Miss Whittaker (England) is the gne= of Mrs. Carrington at College H®nse Mr. and Mrs. Claude Sawtell have -e--turned to Christchurch from the r vi dt to England.
