Sport, Gtey Dynn. — There Is no authentic information as to the price of tickets, but so far as can be gathered with any degree of certainty, the price was 10/ at Ellerslie, while at the outside meetings, it ranged from 2/6 up to 10/. C.J.L.. I‘irnell. — (1) Nine years. (2) One, when he was ridden by I*. White. The Hotchkiss mare All’s Well is now under J. Rae’s chaige. Mark Ryan will have the mount on Ngapuka in the Auckland Cup. Silk web was scratched for all engagements at the Auckland Summer Meeting last week. E. Brewer thinks York the best racecourse in England. The Finland mare Vasa has been permanently retired from the racing track. The Western India Turf Club is advertising for a handicapper. The salary Is XBOO to £lOOO a year.

The Auckland Cup candidate Diabolo Is reported to be more forward now than he has ever been at any stage of his career.

The Explosion horse Pohutu was brought from the South last week, and has since been shipped to Mercury Bay.

The Soult mare Tetrazzini is to be given • couple of months spell, and will not be asked to race before the autumn.

The hospital authorities report that the Jockey J. Pinker continues to make satisfactory progress towards recovery.

Jewellery did not stand the strain of training very long, and the daughter of St. Leger has been mated with Monoform.

The Sou It mare Lady Waterford, recently purchased by Mr S. Green, was shipped to Australia by the Victoria on Monday.

The latest to come into the market for the Auckland Cup is All Red, and last year’s winner 'has been made the medium of strong support.

Prince Foote’s winnings in stakes to date total 12,14550v5, of which be won £1412 as a two-year-old and £10,733 as a three-year-old.

It !« reported that several Australian • ‘sports'* have been disqualified in India. An Indian disqualification takes a deal of removing.

Among the horses advertised for sale in the London “Sportsman” is the ex-Aus-tralian Rnabdil, who found his way to England from India.

The St. Paul gelding Sir Prize will be ridden in the Auckland Cop by Hatch, who will also have the mount on Armlet in the Railway Handicap.

Tn the event of B. Deoley being unsuccessful with his appeal, ft Tr understood J. Conquest will have the mount on Advocate in the Auckland Cup.

C. Jenkins has practically recovered from the injuries he received at Rircarton last month, and will have the mount on All Rod in the Auckland Cup.

As an Indication of how racing is booming in Southland, it may be noted that £3500 will be distributed in stakes during the first three weeks of 1910.

Bookmakers wishing to ply their calling fit the A.R.C. Summer Meeting, must make

application for licenses or before Monday next, the 20th Inst., at noon. The gelding Regain, which jarred his shoulder while working at Ellerslie recently, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. If present intentions are carried out, both Downfall and Chanteuse will carry Mr T. 11. Ix>wry’B colours in (he Auckland Cup. The first-named will be ridden by Wilson, and the latter by Bennett. It is stated that J. E. Pike, the crack Sydney lightweight jockey, will be on a holiday trip to New Zealand in January, and will a_pply for a license to enable him to ride at the Wellington Racing Club’s Summer Meeting at Trentham. The well-known trainer A. Robertson was badly kicked on the foot by Kakama one morning during the week, and has been unable to get about since, the injury being a painful one. A short rest will probably enable him to resume his duties again.

The mishap to the Auckland Cup favourite Aberbrothock it is not thought will prove very serious, and probably a rest of a day or two will put the son of Papakura right again. It is understood the seat of the injury is in the off fore leg.

The chestnut colt First Battery is only a pony, but he is a good one. On the first day of the Woodville meeting he got away badly, but ran a good race, while on the second day, when he got a better start, he cantered home ahead of his field. He is the first of the Field Battery youngsters to win a race.

F. Porter has taken over the stables re cently vacated by F. Hill, and his horses, Te Aral and Kilsyth, were brought from Gisborne last week. Etonian has also been placed under his charge. Te Arai was in a bad way after his arrival, and the services of Mr Halstead had to be called in. The eon of Monaco has made a good recovery.

After the jockeys had weighed out for the Seatoun Handicap at the Wellington Pony and Galloway meeting, the club's officials had Simpkins, who had weighed out to ride Flying Wind in the first instance, put aside, and substituted Mallowes in his stead. In the race under notice, Mallowes hopped Flying Wind out from the barrier, and the issue was never in doubt.

At -a meeting of the Committee of the iSouth Auckland Racing Club, the programme for the 25th and 26th February, covering stakes totalling £615, was approved. The offer of Messrs Blomfield and Co. to work the total isa tor was accepted. It was decided to erect half a mile of fencing inside the course, and charge the Waikato Trotting Club £lO for the use of the course. Arrangements will be made for similar train services to those of last year. Bookmakers’ fees were fixed at £lO per day, and the club decided to retain the gates.

Members of the V.R.C. committee met in two batches on December 3, to consider and adjudicate on betting disputes arising out of the V.R.C. Spring Meeting. Originally there were 56 cases to consider, but Mr E. J. Wright, the club’s detective, managed to settle all but 24. Four of these were held over, and 20 were considered on December 4. One section of the committee sat from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the other from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The position of a member of the V.R.C. committee is no sinecure.

For some years past rain has been plentiful in Auckland before Christmas, and trainers have been able to keep their horses up to the collar. This season has been an exception, and owing to the continued spell of dry weather the grass tracks at Rllerslle are as hard as bell metal, and it is a big risk to gallop a horse on them. This has had a serious effect on the various horses, and it is safe to say that at no previous time has there been so little important work before a big meeting as at present. Probably before another year rolls arouna the water will be laid on to the course which would greatly relieve the situation and give those in charge of horses some chance of getting their charges sufficiently forward to see through a four days’ campaign. At present they are greatly hampered.

By the Tongarlro, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday, the thoroughbred stallion AH Black was brought to New Zealand. He was purchased a couple of months ago by Mr. F 3. J. Watt, and Is to take the place of Merriwee at the Longlands Stud. As a th rec-year-old All Black ran unplaced In the Derby, and was fourth In the Two Thousand Guineas, and sixth in the St. Leger. He won three minor events in the nomination of Mr. A. Bailey, who afterwards disposed of him to Messrs, ('lark and Robinson. For his new owners be failed to win a race as a four year-old.

but he was second In the Kempton Park Great Jubilee Handicap, second in the Manchester Cup, and third in the Newbury Cup. He was entered for the spring handicaps In 1909, but did not compete, and was subsequently sold to come to New Zealand. He is a brown horse, bred in 1904 by Lord Clonmell, and is by Gallinule, from Vortex, by St. Angela, from Whirlpool, by See Saw, from Miss Pool, by Parmesan, from Lady Hawthorne, by Stockwell. Although Gallinule has been one of the most successful sires in England in recent years, All Black is the first of his sons that has been imported to the Dominion, and as he will have excellent opportunities at the Longlands Stud, he should quickly make his mark as a sire.

The monthly meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Committee was held last week, the Hon. E. Mitchelson presiding. The appeal of R. Hannon and P. Brady against the decision of the A.R.C. stewards in connection with the running of Miss Winnie in. the Wynyard Handicap at the recent spring meeting, the committee on consideration decided was a question of fact, and that no appeal could be made. It was decided to hear the appeal lodged by B. Deeley against his suspension by the Takapuna Jockey Club on Monday night next. Deeley’s license to be suspended pending the Metropolitan Committee coming to a decision. Licenses were granted as follows: —Trainers: J. Greenwood, J. W. Jones. A. E. Kelly, Christopher Kelly, Thos. O’Connor, and E. Wylds. Jockeys: W. 11. Windsor, J. Kean, G. Kenny, Edward Potts. Apprentice jockeys: J. B. Bennett and Walter E. Percival.

The A.R.C. committee met subsequently, the Hon. E. Mitchelson being in the chair. Three new members were elected. Transfers were passed as follows:—J. F. Reid: To D. Rutherford, brown filly, lyr, by Stepniak—Sortie; to E. J. Watt, chestnut filly, lyr, by Stepniak—Rosella: to John Buckley, brown colt, 1 yr, by Stepniak—Armilia. J. B. Reid: To A. Dunean, bay filly, lyr, bv Kilcheran—Couronne: to I. G. Duncan, brown colt, lyr, by Kilcheran—Fanna. H, Gaisford: To J. W. McCombe, bay colt Tawhaki, 3yrs; to John Buckley, black fillv Madhura, 2yrs. G. D. Greenwood to John Buckley, brown filly Aerina, 2yrs: T. H. Dowry to A. Ellingham, black filly Glissade, Syrs; Mrs E. Davies to F. Trigg, brown gelding Eoongana. It was decided not to issue free ladies’ tickets for the summer meeting, but to reduce the charge for their admission to the grandstand enclosure to 5/ each. THE OUTSIDERS. (To the Sporting Editor.) Sir, —Now that the big race meeting Is on hand at Ellerslie, would you allow me space for a few lines in the interests of the outside public, who. to a large extent, keep the game going? The club have enlarged the public stand, and now, if they could see their way to erect a large fly over it, they would be conferring a great boon to their outside visitors, for it would be a shelter It it rained, and a shade for the people if It was a very hot day.—-Yours etc., E. BANON. i * i TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Roscommon, the half-brother to Euroclydon, had an easy win in the Rakaia Cup, the principal attraction at the Rakaia Racing Club’s meeting on Thursday last. The winners at the same fixture were Wardland. Firefly, Lady Orizoin, Demur, and Glory. Forbury Park Trotting Club intends distributing 1500 sovs in stake money at its February meeting. An offer of 800 sovs was refused recently for Tawhaki, which was acquired by his present owner, Mr. 3. McCombe, for 500 guineas a few weeks ago. Stratagem, which was recently sold to a Southland sportsman, is being trained at Riverton by A. Ward. While contesting the Spreydon Hack Handicap at Plumpton Park on Thursday, Mr. D. Rutherford's Rocky Knob, a four-year-old gelding by Castashure —Mona, broke one of his fetlocks, and had to be destroyed. A sporting match has been arranged between two well-known North Canterbury residents, Messrs. C. O. Rutherford and C. H. Ensor, who have matched two hacks. Deceiver and Spider respectively for £5O a side for a walking race over 50 miles of rough country. The judge and the course have yet to be decided upon. Sweltering heat was experienced on the second day of the Christchurch Racing Club’s Meeting, and, though the attendance was only moderate, there was a slight Increase In totalisator receipts. Fireglow, a shapely two-year-old daughter of Martian and Fireside, won the Kindergarten Handicap, Martine, another of Martian’s progeny, acting as runner-up. True Knight, a Chokebore-trained son of Sir Buddo and Purity, made his debut in this event, but failed to show much pace. After her wretched display on the first day, Routade’s win in the Mainland Welter created so much feeling that the stewards were compelled to take notice of the filly’s great reversal of form. Explanations were forthcoming, "however, and the judge’s placIngs remained unaltered. The EPglish-bred filly Wet Day gave further proof of her ability by putting down a fairly useful field in the Anniversary Handicap. Rhe wna badly placed in the early stages of the race, a fart that enhanced the merits of her win. Wot Day

Is by Macintosh, from Laid ide, by Ladas, from Intriguer, by Victor Chief. She is a particularly nice filly, but bad joints threaten to make her racing career a brief on. Ingoda, the Oaks winner* which was made favourite, did not shape at all well, and it was left to two outsiders in Passion and Tikitere. Home Genius followed up his first day’s success by capturing the Spreydon Hack Handicap in equally convincing style, and he is just the sort to go on winning, for be is still susceptible to a lot of improvement. The injuries sustained by Silkweb when he got galloped on In the Flying Handicap were apparently more imaginary than real, for, though still lame, that did not prevent him putting down a good sized field in the Electric Handicap. To have seen him hobbling away from the course last Saturday, one could well be excused for prophesying a lengthy retirement for him. After Obligate had won the Sockburn Plate his rider failed to draw the weight, consequently the stake went to Equivocate, who finished second. * * * A.R.C. ACCEPTANCES.
