Mr. Herbert Bloy, the well-known violinist, left by the expre.se on Monday week for Wellington, where he intends to reside.

Wilding, the tennis player, returned to New Zealand by the s.s. Marama, which arrived at Wellington on Thursday.— (Press Association telegram.) Mr. W. H. Hemingway, F.N.Z.A.A., left on Monday night by the Maheno, en route for England, in order to go through a special course at the London University School of Economies. Mr. Hemingway will visit the Continent and America, and it is his intention to devote himself largely to the study of modern accountancy methods, commercial education, and correspondence instruction. - • 1 An old anil respected resident of Devonport passed away last week in the person of Mr. W. McKenzie, aged 79 years. The deceased arrived in New Zealand from Nova Scotia in 1800, and in 1871 took up his residence at Devonport, where he had resided ever since. He is survive! by a widow and three .sons and daughters. ‘ Commissary General J. O. Haniley, C. 8., retired list, recently celebrated his eighty-ninth birthday." The gallant veteran served with the Ordnance Department at Sydney over sixty years ago, and from 1847 to 1870 he was in charge of the military stores in New Zealand, and took part .n the Maori campaigns of 1847-8 in the Southern usitriet and of 1800-1 in the Northern District. He retired from the active, list in the seventies, and was given the C.B. At the conclusion of the sitting of the Manukau Licensing Committee, Mr. Wm. Westney read the following address w Mr. Northeroft, S.M., the chairman: “As this is the final occasion on which the Manukau Licensing Committee will have the pleasure of sitting in council with you, we feel that we cannot let it pass without some acknowledgment of the very able manner in which you have conducted our meetings. We feel that your expositions of the licensing law and your direction as chairman were so obviously based on legal, just, and honourable grounds, that they have won our respect and confidence. We are, indeed, sorry to lose your rble guidance and advice, and you will always retain our highest esteem. Wo sincerely trust that your retirement from office may be followed by many years of well-earned repose, and that you may have health and strength to enjoy it.” Mr. Northeroft suitably responded. Mr. and Mrs. Dalrymple, of Bulls, who have been stopping at the Grand Hotel, left on Thursday on a visit to the Waitomo Caves.

The Dunedin Presbytery has granted nine months’ leave of ateenee to tho Rev. Dr. Nisbet, pastor of First Church, cn account of ill-health.

Dr. Kirk, who is going out as a missionary to Canton, was ordained to the eldership at a mec.ting of the Auckland Presbytery, held at St. James’ Hall last week.

Mr. Parker, of Christchurch, who has been on a visit to Auckland, left on Thursday for three weeks in the Hot Lakes district, and will return for the Christmas racing. Mr. H. Hall, who has been chief engineer at the Auckland Hospital for the last 20 years, has resigned his position. Mr. Wyllie, the assistant engineer has also tendered his resignation. His Excellency Dr. Solf, Governor of German Samoa, accompanied by Frau Solf and suite, left the Grand Hotel, where he has been staying for the past week, on a visit to Rotorua on Thursday.

The Right Hon. Richard Robert Cherry, K.C., LL.D., Attorney-General for Ireland, who succeeds the late Lord Fitzgibbon, as Lord Justice of Appeal fo-r Ireland, was uncle to the late Mr. Edward Villiers Briscoe, C.E., of Wellington. West Coasters residing in Wellington entertained the Hon. R. McKenzie, (Minister for Mines and Public Works) last week, and presented him with an illuminated address, whilst Mrs. McKenzie wa? presented with a gold bangle.—Press As boeiation.

Mr. and Mrs. Parata (of Dunedin), who have been staying at the Star Hotel during the visit to Auckland, left on Friday morning for Rotorua. Mr. Menzies Gibb, the Christchurch artist, intends leaving for England in March next to study in England and on the Continent for a couple of years. Mr. A. Mclntyre (works superintendent for the Union Steamship Co. ■ at Port Chalmers) returned to the South on Thursday from a visit to Auckland. He was acompanied by Mr. T. Mclntyre (of Onehunga). Mr. J. K. Logan, who recently retired from the position of superintendent of electric lines, has beer, appointed to represent New Zealand* at the Australasian. In view of the Hon. E. Mitchelson’s announcement that he ■ intends to vacate the chair at the Auckland Harbour Board after next meeting, efforts are being made by members to induce Mr. A. J. Entrican to accept the position. Mr. Entrican has not yet expressed any definite decision. Among the passengers to arrive at Wellington from Sydney on Wednesday by the Marama was the Very Rev. Father Murray, of the Redemptorist Order, who succeeds the Rev. Father Clune as Superior for the Wellington district. He was. accompanied by the Rev. An enthusiastic meeting was held ix the Newmarket Hall last week, for the purpose of organising a testimonial tc Mr. F. Lawry, M.P. for Parnell, to suitably recognise the valuable services rendered by him to the people of New Zealand during his 21 years’ service to the colony as a member of Parliament. It was decided that the testimonial was tc. be non-party, as we know that Mr. Lawry has a large circle of friends outside hie" party who, we feel sure, would like tc subscribe to the fund. Mr. J. S. Dixor was appointed treasurer, and Mr. Watt secretary, with Mr. G. Wilkinson chairman of committee.

Mr. Henry Shaw returned by the Main Trunk from Wellington on Saturday, after attending the meeting of the council of the N.Z. Society of Accountants. Mr. A. J. Mr. Arthur Goldie, who as ground superintendent at the West End Lawns, has rendered invaluable assistance to the Club, was presented on Saturday afternoon with a silver entree dish as a mark of the members’ appreciation.
