A TRUE COLONIAL GATHERING-AXEMEN AND SAWYERS’ COMPETITION AT OHAKUNE.
Competitions for axemen and sawyers are thoroughly colonial institutions, and in th“ bush districts they attract much attention and keen rivalry. On November 9th a successful carnival was held by the Ohakune Athletic and Axemen’s Association. (It The twelve-inch standing chop, won by Woodward. (2) Double saw competition, 20in. log. won by Woodward and Gregory. (3) S. G. Carlson, winner of the maiden saw. 20in log. (4i S. Woodward, winner of the maiden chop. 12in standing chop, and underhand chop. 18in, and A. Gregory, who, with S. Woodward won the double saw 20in log. (5) Part of the crowd at Ohakune during the carnival, which was under the patronage of Mr G. A. Gamman. Mr. S. Athy was president, and Mr 11. C. Percy, secretary.
