MR. D. SILK’S JEWELLERY ESTABLISHMENT.

The progress of Auckland is well shown by the great improvement in the appearance of the business establishments in Queen-street within the last few years. This is very noticeable in the fine premises recently fittted by Mr. David Silk, and named “Goldsmith’s Hall.” This place has been fitted up in really firstclass style. The verandah is of the latest type, and the frontage is rendered more striking by the use of leaded lights. The entrance to the doorway is tessellated pavement, and when the visitor enters the premises the eye is gratified by the beauty of the arrangements. Undoubtedly, Mr. Silk has one of the best lighted shops in Queen-street. All the goods are protected from dust in plate-glass cases, which form the counters all round the establishment. The ceilings are of fibrous plaster, beautiful ir. design, and painted a dead white. The floor of the premises is reinforced concrete, and at the rear of the shop is a large strong-room, similarly constructed. All articles left for repair are placed in this strong-room overnight, to be safe in the event of fire. The walls of the back premises are sheathed with asbestos as an additional precaution against fire. It may be gathered, therefore, that Mr. Silk has a thoroughly up-to-date establishment, replete with every convenience for his patrons.
