September b. Hockey Ball. The gaieties in connection with the visit of the hockey players culminated in a grand ball in the Garrison Hall on Friday week. The members of the visiting teams were present in full force, together with the managers and chaperons, and fully 250 couples took advantage of the splendid music. A special train from Hastings brought numerous visitors from that town. The hall was elaborately decorated with streamers and bunting in colours representative of the different teams, and with the dainty colours of the ladies’ dresses, combined to make an attractive and animated scene. There were a great many very pretty dresses worn, and, of course, with so many strangers present, it was impossible to remember all the frocks. Amongst the Auckland visitors I noticed Miss Wynyard, in a handsome creme satin charmeuse Empire gown; Miss Cooke, dainty creme silk; Miss Paton, pretty pale blue frock; Miss Culling, soft white muslin; Miss Ward, white silk. From Wellington were Mrs. de la Mere, in a handsome black net gown over glace; Miss Arnold, becoming white satin gown; Mies E. Ellison, handsome creme net gown over shrimp-pink satin; Miss Kelling, creme satin charmeuse. Amongst the Nelson ladies were: Miss Hamley, lovely mauve crepe de chine, deeper tone velvet trimmings; Miss Harl, pretty white frock of chiffon glace; Miss Coster, eau de nil silk; her sister wore pale pink; Miss Lucus, white muslin frock; Mies Everett,
