The championship of Auckland was de-, cided on Saturday at the Cornwall Park links, in beautiful weather. The contestants were Messrs Parker, Upton, and J. C. Burns. As was expected, the contest was an interesting one. It ended in a win for Burns by the fairly substantial margin of four up, and three to- play, and throughout was full of interest, especially as, at, the end of the first round the players were all square. Play in the long game was remarkably good, but both players occasionally showed weakness in approaching, and on the green. Upton deserves great credit lor the position he has achieved in the Club’s being runner-up. and no player has probably improved more in the past twelve months. Two rounds were played, the first starting at ten o’clock. Mr. F. G. Hood, the Club’s professional. acted as referee. At the first hole both men pulled their drives. Burns got iiito trouble with his second, and eventually gave up the hole. Going to the second, the two got awmy well, but Burns missed an opportunity for the hole, which resulted in a half in five. At the third, Upton badly missed his drive, apd Burns, reaching the green with a splendid cleek shot, won the hole in three. Driving for the fourth both cleared the hedge well, and their seconds were just short of the Ring Rocks. Weak play by Burns gave Upton the hole. Going to the fifth, Burns laid his second nicely for the hole, and got a comfortable win in four. The sixth was won by Burns in five to an indifferent six. Play to the seventh was not brilliant, the hole being eventually halved in six. Burns played nicely on to the eighth green, with a cleek shot, Upton being short, and Burns got a three to his opponent’s four. Going to the ninth irons were used for the second shots, and Upton playing his third pulled it badly. Burns got on to the green with the like, and ought to have won, but was laid a stymie by Upton, the result being a half in six. Burns was two up at the turn. Getting away good drives for the tenth, both were weak in their approaches, and the hole was halved in five. Going to the Eastern Crater, Burns got nicely on to the green with his drive, winning in four to five. Burns failed to reach the green at Jacob’s Ladder, and Upton got a nice one within four feet of the pin. Burns made a good recovery, but failed to hole in the putt, and the hole was halved. Playing nicely, Burns -..0n the thirteenth in three to four. The next hole was halved in four. Playing for the fifteenth, both were close to the green in three, Upton holing a nice putt, won the hole in three, five. Both made excellent drives for the sixteenth, but Burns topped his second and third. The green play was weak, and the hole resulted in a win for Upton in six to seven. At the seventeenth each player required two to get on the green, and Upton holding a nice putt won the hole in three. At the eighteenth it took each four to reach the green, and bad putting saw the hole halved in seven, the players finishing ah square. The second round began at two o’clock. Both drove off fairly, but Upton failed to negotiate the plantation, and the hole was secured by Burns in 5 to 7. Indifferent play at the second hole saw it halved in six. With a neat deep shot Burns reached the third green, but Upton’s drive was short, and Burns, who won in three, was now two up. Going to the fouth, Burns did nor manage to get over the hedge, and conceded the hole to his opponent. The two next drives were good, but Burns duffed his second, and Upton landing nicely on the green, and holing an attractive putt for three, took the hole against Burns* five. With a well-played five, Burns claimed the Onehunga hole. Driving to the seventh both men got in good ones, but a weak approach lost Upton the hole, Burns holing out in five to seven. Burns made a feeble approach, and Upton had the eighth to his credit in three. Both were short of the wall in their seconds going to the ninth, but an indifferent putt on Upton’s part gave •Burns the hole with six, and made him two up at the turn. A brace of good drives followed, but both players were short of the green with their seconds. Upton’s nice approach brought him to within three feet of the flag, and Burns playing the like, holed his approach from about 25 yards— Burns three up. After a well-played four, the eastern crater went to the leading man. Ills opponent taking one more. Burns over

shot the green at Jacob’s, and Upton holed in three. Both drove well at the amphitheatre, but required three on the greeu, and the hole was halved in four. Going to the fourteenth both approached well to within about six feet of the pin, and a weak putt by Uptou caused him to lose the hole, with a five to Burns' four. Going to the fifteenth both lay on the green in three, but Upton failed to hole a long putt, and save the situation, eventually getting a half in five —this giving Burns the championship by four up and three to play. Burns’ card for the round read 5,6, 3, —, 5,5, 5,4, 6,3, 4, —, 4. 4,5; while that of the runner-up was 7,6, 5,8, 3,7, —, 3, 8,1, 5,3, 4,5, 5.
