The entries for this year’s championship constitute a record in every way, not only as regards numbers in every event, but in quality of players and in the number of clubs represented. The semi-finals of the championship of the Auckland Golf Club were played on Saturday at Cornwall Park, in splendid golfing weather. The greens were in excellent order, and the links, though suffering from the effects of the recent heavy rain, allowed very good lies on the whole, and, consequently, some creditable scores were handed in. The match in which the greatest interest was taken was between Burns and S. Upton. Burns is an ex-cham-pion, and a man to be reckoned with anywhere in New Zealand. Upton is a young player, who only recently secured a position in the first division, and has until lately been playing on the ten mark. He has, however, rapidly improved, and from the fact that he has worked himself into the semi-final, it was anticipated that he would put up a good fight. This he undoubtedly did, and was only beaten by three up and two to ’play. At the first hole both players drove splendid balls. Burns was in trouble with his second, and Upton won the bole. At the second Burns got all square, and took the third with a fine drive on to the Outpost. He also drove a magnificent ball for the fourth, Upton failing. At the fifth Burns was three up. At the next hole, though Burns drove well, he failed in the putt, and halved the hole. At the eighth Upton drove wide, but made a remarkable recovery, and holed out in three. He also took the ninth, leaving Burns one up. ’ Burns won the tenth, eleventh, and halved the Ladder, this giving him a lead of three, and he further increased his advantage at the Amphitheatre, where he was four up. Upton, however, was not to be denied, and with a very fine effort took the next two holes, leaving his opponent two up and three to go at the fifteenth. The sixteenth was a very poor specimen of golf, both drives being weak, bnt Burns managed to win, thus securing the match three up and two to play. The other match between Parker Upton and Leslie Mair was expected to result In a victory for Upton, who can certainly be classed in the first quartet of the Auckland Golf Flub. Mair, who lias done remarkably well to figure in the semi final, was not equal to his opponent. In the first five holes Mair was four down, which is too much of a lead for a player of Upton’s calibre, but from there on Mair held his own, and his play was noteworthy from the fact that he was able to make some wonderful recoveries at critical moments. He missed the hedge nt the fourth, but halved the hole in six. The mat<4i ended -In a win for Upton five up and four to play. Next Saturday the final will be played between Burns and Parker Upton, and a great fight may be expected. Upton will have to be in his very best form to beat Byrne, who is undoubtedly a champion when playing Championship game*.

Medfeal V. Waitemata. A mateti was played at Cornwall Park between the golfing members of the medical profession aud a team from the Walcemata Club, the latter winning by six games to four. The scores were:— Gordon (M) beat Smythe (W), 2 up; Dudley (M) beat Johns (W), 6 uud 4; Callender (W) beat Purchase (M), 5 and 4; Nettleton (W) beat Ix-wls (M), 4 and 3; Sieur (W) beat Grant (Ml, 6 aud 5; Guinness (M) beat Wyatt (W); Parkes (M) beat Cccke (W), 1 and 3: Milne (W) beat Goldstein (M); Laird (W) beat Mllson (M), 8 and 5; Carter (W) beat Kinder (M), 4 and 3. Waitemata won six and Medical four. Napier v. Manawatu. Teams repiesenting Manawatu and Napier Golf Clubs met here on Saturday in an in-ter-elub match. Napier won all games except one, aud retain the Wilson Cup.
