Osaka is an important city of Central Japan, at the head of the Gulf of the same name. It is the commercial centre of the Empire, and the headquarters of the rice and tea trade. In addition to the magnificent temple, now destroyed, Osaka possesses a fine castle, the stones of which are of astonishing size, while the palace built in its precincts, and destroyed in 18G8, was perhaps the most magnificent structure in Japan.
