July 22. The Theatre. The Pollard Juvenile Opera Company opened the season with wet weather, but despite the elements every seat in the theatre was occupied. The ladies (almost without exception) wore their evening cloaks, and some of those, were so extremely pretty I think I shall describe a few of the most noticeable:— Miss Evans, lemon velvet with large collar and cuffs of cream satin, veiled in heavy gold insertion, trimmed with ■white fox for, Empire ribbons of tangerine; Mrs. Jack Beamish, a very handsome grey, much soutache in white; Miss Williams, old rose cloth with sable trimmings; Mrs. Stronach, long Oriental cape in a soft terra, white facings and soutache; Mrs. Douglas, lovely cream cloak; Mrs. Chas. Scott, dreamy coat of midnight blue: with quilted col-

tar anS cuffs, flounced with soft white muslin de sfoie, banded with blue ribbon; Mrs. Macdonell, * becoming electric blue serge coat, trimmed with brown fur; Mrs. Newbigen, pastel blue, with Oriental cloth collar and cuffs, edged with dark brown marmot, exceedingly pretty; Mrs. Lewis, deep terra-cotta with brown fur edgings. Others present were: —Mesdames Lean, I.uckie, Miller, Murray, Armstrong, Mimes Williams, E. Williams, Cuthbert, Seale (Napier), Robinson, Godfrey, Messrs. Tosswill Lewis, Miller, Scott, Evans, Foley, Donald, Luckie, Beamish |(2), Williams, Wilson, Godfrey, Leay Mackersey, Fitzroy. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. Stronach have been .visiting Christchurch. Mrs. Gascoyne’s nephew (Mr. Gibb, Bon of Dr. Gibb, late of New Plymouth) has published several of his songs in Auckland, where his singing was much liked. (Miss Fillelue (Otago) has returned, after a lengthy visit in Hawke’s Bay. Mr. and Mrs. Murray have gone to [Palmerston for a holiday. Mrs. (Dr.) Copland is recovering tlowly. Mrs. Banks has her sister from Auckland visiting her. Miss Cuthbert is the guest of Mrs. Cuthbert (her sister-in-law). Miss Seale (Napier) is the guest of Mrs. Jack Beamish.
