i - * . ' T May 20. Mr. Herbert Babbage, R.A., who has returned to New Zealand for a short visit, had a display of his pictures in SberrifFs Studio for a week. A very large number availed themselves of seeing his numerous beautiful pictures, Since leaving Wanganui seven years ago, he has studied in England, France, Italy, Switzerland, etc. Amongst the interested spectators I noticed:—Mr., Mrs. and Miss Corry, Mrs. and Miss Wilford, Mr. and Mrs. Colin Campbell, Dr. and Mrs. Earle, Mrs. and Miss Moore, Mrs. and Miss Anderson, Mrs. Blundell (Nelson), Madame Melba (England), Mr. and Mies Mason, Mr. and Mts. At Madame Melba’s concert, in the Opera House, last week, the famous prime donna wore an exquisite toilette of crimson satin made in Direetoire style, with a wide black oat in sash falling from the side of her skirt, and most beautiful jewels—a large diamond and ruby tiara, a diamond necklace; ths front of her corsage was

studded with diamonds, and a mogniflcent rope of diamonds hanging to her waist. During the evening she was presented with a floral device bouquet of violets. Amongst the audience I noticed Mrs. McNaughton Christie, in a black silk evening gown with lace and jet on her corsage; Miss Christie wore an old rose crepe de chine made in Empire style, with net and lace on her cunsage, and in her coiffure she wore a bow of black ribbon; Miss Nixon wore a white silk gown with frills of narrow Valenciennes lace; Mrs. G. Saunders, Hack evening gown and opera coat of black brocade with wide collars and revers of cream satin, white feather boa; Miss Cotterill (Christchurch), black chiffon taffetas gown with net on her corsage, pretty cream cloth opera coat; Mrs. Mackay, pale blue silk gown with beautiful lace on her corsage, blue opera eoat with lace and insertion, bouquet of violets; Mrs. L. Jones, black silk relieved with cream lace; Mrs. Ha trick wore a becoming black silk evening gown with gauged cream net on her corsage; Madame Briggs, cream silk gown with silver sequins on her corsage, and net; Mrs. Briggs wore a black silk gown relieved with cream laee; Mrs. Moorq champagne shaded crepe de chine gown with bands of wide insertion and laee; Miss Moore, white muslin froek with lace and insertion, smart saxe blue cloth opera coat with blue and gold thread embroidery; Mrs. James Walt, cream silk gown with laee on her corsage: Mrs. A. E. Kitchen, cream charmeuse gown with lace, beautiful dull electric blue Oriental satin coat; Miss Willis wore a white silk gown with silver sequins on her corsage; Miss A. Willis, pale pink chiffon taffetas with narrow frills of Valenciennes lace and silver embroidery; Mrs. H. Wilson, black chiffon taffetas gown with net and lace on her corsage, cream opera coat with ornamental buttons and green velvet piping; Miss Wilford wore a becoming pale blue, silk gown with net end gold thread embroidery, saxe blue cloth opera coat with Oriental trimming. Harry Rickard’s Company, Leaded by Paul Cinquevalli. gave its only performance at the Opera House on Monday evening. There was a very Large audience. Amongst those present, were Mr. and Mrs. Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Lomax, Mr. and Mrs. Good, Mr. and Mrs. 11. Lethbridge, Mr. Allan, Mr. and Mrs. Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. Boriaoe, Miss Cameron, Mr. and Mrs. Matthews, Misses Wills (2). Miss Harrison, Misses Todd (2), Misses Stevenson, Carew (Dunedin), Brettargli, Nixon (3), Anderson. Gresson, Mr. and Mrs. G. Saunders, Mrs. Saunders, Mr. and Mrs. Imlay Saunders, Mr. and Mrs. Lomas, Miss Cotterill (Christchurch), Miss Gow (Dunedin), Mr. and Miss Jones, Mr. and Mrs. D. Mrs. James Anderson gave a very enjoyable afternoon tea last Tuesday, when all the guests were asked to bring photos. of themselves when a baby, and the one who guessed the greatest number gob the prize. E. Anderson, H. Anderson, J. Marshall. Christie. Ashcroft, G. Anderson, Mason, Hadfield (2), and others. Last Friday night Miss Rei ehart gave a very enjoyable little bridge party. There were three tables, and the prizes were won by Mrs. S. Gordon and Miss Carew (Dunedin). The Eg-mont Wanganui Hunt Club held their meet at Marangai, Mr. Allan Cameron’s homestead, last Saturday. The day was cold and wintry, and although hares were plentiful, the cold wind nullified the scent, so that the hounds were soon at fault. Delicious refreshments were provided by Mr. and Mrs. Allan Cameron, and hearty cheers were called for by Mr. H. Nixon for host and hostess. Amongst those following were Messrs. Bristol, Barton, Blair, Gordon, Moore. Lynch, Turner, Mrs. G. Gordon, Mias A. Nixon, Miss McDonald. Among trie spectators were: Mrs. Bristow (Wellington). Mrs. Cutfield, Mrs. L. Moore, Mr. F. Miss Richmond, of Wanganui, is visiting relations in Nelson. Airs. Christie, of Wanganui, is staying in Masterton with her daughter. Miss Maunders, of Rangitikei, is the guest of Miss Reiehart in Wanganui. . Airs. Bristow, of Wellington, is staying in Wanganui with her sister, Mrs. C. Mi 11 ward.
