April 8. Tennis. The Hawera tennis players journeyed to Patea last Saturday to play a return match. Heavy showers of rain fell during the afternoon, which interfered very much with the play. Hawera weie handicapped in not having Messrs. Sellar, Bell and Hair, three of their best men. Tho result of the match was a decisive victory for Patea. The Hawera players were: — Mrs. Brewer, Misses Caplin. Koch, Nolan and Glenn, Messrs. Caplen (2), Swainson, Hedditeh, Chalmers and Gibson. The Patea team were: Mesdames Payne, Jones, Powdrell, Misses Powdrell and Hamerton, Messrs. Powdrell. AVybourne, Whitehead, Jones, Kennedy, and Martin. Golf. Last Tuesday was ladies’ competition day. The first prize, a golf club presented by Mrs. Nalder, was won by Mi-s Coutts. Mrs. Foyster being second. Among some of the enthusiasts going to New Plymouth to take part in the tournament are Mrs. Gillies, Miss Coutts, Messrs. Gillies, O’Callaghan, Turton, Treweek, Chettle, Tarrant, Sutton. Ryan and Jones .(Patea).
personal Items. ' ” Miss Bramwell (Auckland) is the guest of Mrs. Page, llawera. Mrs. \V. (). Williams, of Hawera, has gone on a long holiday to Christchurch. Miss < iitlicld, who has b?en on a long holiday to New Plymouth, spent a few days in liawera as the guest of Mrs. Nolan before returning to her home in AVanga nui. Mr. Bank, clerk of the Magistrate’s Court, llawera. has resigned the position and intends practising law at Hastings. Mr. Banks will be succeeded by Mr. I). \\ . Mason, of Stratford. Miss Turnbull returned to llawera last Tuesday, after a long holiday spent in the Eolith Island. Quite a nunilier of Pa tea people have gone to Wanganui for the tennis tournament, Mesclanies Payne, Powdrel 1 , Jones, Miss Lucy Powdrell, Messrs. S\vain>on and Powdrell being among the number. Quite a gloom was east over Nonnanby last Saturday, when it became known that Mr. R. P. Olarkson, who was for many years headmaster of the school there had met his death by drowning at Napier. JOAN.
