One of the most popular pictures at the Auckland Art Gallery—Biair Leighton’s 'Tn Time of Peril”—has been the subject of a careful copy by Mrs. Kathleen Bnrcher. or the Northern City. The original is noted for its multiplicity of detail and picturesque colouring, all of which make the subject easily transparent to the public eye. The artist, who has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy since 1887. is noted for his careful drawing and painstaking effort. He has always been a slow worker, building up his pictures step by step after the. manner of the older masters in contradistinction to the bold free and inspirational methods of modern French and Spanish painters. Mrs Burcher was particularly fortunate in having received from Biair Leighton himself details of the. colours he usually employs on his palette before commencing her arduous work. Site has succeeded in making a very faithful reproduction, both In drawing and colour ar. as a copy, the work has neces-

sarily been of months duration invohf* ing the greatest care and patience. The soft, warm tints, particularly where the artist uses pure colour, have received harmonious treatment throughout, and conspire to make the canvas an accurate and pretty piece of work.
