In a school match in Sydney recently, one of the boys bowled his first three overs for five runs, in the fourth ever he bowled six batsmen out, and with the first ball of the following over bowled another batsman —thus bowling seven -wickets with successive balls. On this season’s form Barnes hr one of the best batsmen in Australia (says a Sydney exchange). This latest innings confirms the impression created by his •batting against Glebe that he has developed iar judgment, and is now able to make full use of his undoubted gifts and skill. In the match under renew Barnes scored 106. Auckland. The fifth round of the championship matches was concluded at Auckland on Saturday last in glorious weather. It was an ideal batsman’s wicket, and three centuries were put up. In the senior matches, City beat Parnell by 132 runs on the first innings. In reply to Parnell’s 136 the City eleven put up 268, of which R. Neill compiled 78. When the stumps were drawn Parnell had 114 for seven wickets. Of the Parnell bowlers, A. The winners scored 291 runs, in reply to the 163 of their opponents. In the second innings Pom sonby had 82 on the board for the loss of five wickets, Woods making 54. In the second grade Parnell “A” beat North Shore by 26 runs on the first innings, Eden "B” won a close game with Grafton by nine runs, and Ponsonby “A” went down to Eden “A” by 59 runs on the first innings. Among the third grade teams, Eden “B” beat City by eight runs on the first innings, and North Shore succumbed to Parnell by twenty-one runs—a three point win. The Blanket Shield Match. The Auckland players to meet the Otago team in the Plunket Shield match next week will be: A. E. Relf (Eden Colts). A. M. Howden (North Shore), G. Cummings (Eden "A”), E. V. Sale (Parnell), S. P. A match wag played at Coromandel on -Saturday, between the Upper and Lower townships, the latter winning by an innings and 28 runs. Napier. At. a meeting of the Napier Cricket Association, the dates January 5,6, and 7 were accepted for the Otago match, arrangements were made for the visit of the Poverty Bay team on December 28th and 29th, and it was decided to challenge the Auckland Association for the Plunket Shield this season. The protest from the Ahuriri Club against the ■win of the Hastings Club, on the ground of having played a senior man, wa*. dismissed, the player in question not having been registered as a senior, .the championship matches will be suspended from December 20 to January 2nd for the Christmas holidays. Wellington. In the senior cricket matches on Saturday Gas ('ompimy defeated Newton by 26 runs on the first innings. Gas Company made 227 (Topp 4‘». Dredge 45, Payne 37 not out. Hawthorne 24). Newtown on the previous Saturday hail made 2bl. Phoenix, who had made 310 on the previous Saturday, scored a first innings victory over Y.M.C.A., the latter making 285. In connection with the visit of the next Australian cricket team, the Board of Control, in regard to the remuneration of players, decided that it would take the whole of the money, and retain 5 per cent, of the first £6OOO takings, and 12 per cent, of the balance over that amount (says a Sydney telegram).
