PALMERSTON NORTH

Dear Bee, September 11. The weather remained glorious to the last for the Manawatu golf tournament. On Friday the flnalu for the championships were played, and resulted in a win for Mrs Bevan, of Otaki, who defeated Miss Una Williams, of Wellington. For the men’s championship there was a great battle' between A. Barraud, champion of Manawatu, and K. Dunean, ol

Wellington. Barnutd got a lead of 3 up at the fourth hole; Dunean came steadily on, and at the fifteenth his opponent only had a lead of one. The W'ellingtOH player drew level at the sixteenth, and the next two holes were halved, making the game all square at the last hole. In the play-off, to the nineteenth bole Duncan unfortunately topped his drive, but made a splendid recovery. Barraud, however, beat him, and so won the ehampionship. The ladies’ team match was won by the Wanderers —Miss Beatson (Hastings), Miss Simpson (Wellington), Miss Stafford (Wellington), and Mrs Baddeley (Kimbolton). On Friday afternoon the prizes won by the successful competitors were presented by Her Excellency Lady Plunket. The Governor was also present. Colonel Gorton made a suitable little speech, and remarked that he hoped to see the New Zealand championship played here at no distant date. Mr Colbeck, of Auckland, replied on behalf of the visitors. Presentations were made to Miss Somerville and Mr Pratt for services during the tournament. Mr St. Clair Jounneaux was also presented with a special prize. He only lost the 36-hole stroke competition through an unintentional breach of the rules. The golf week was fittingly terminated by a delightful little dance given at the Municipal Hall on Friday night by the A.D.C.’s at Government House, Captain Gathorne-Hardy and Captain Lyon. Despite the impromptu nature of the dance, invitations were just given verbally as friends were met. The decorations were most elaborate. The hall was effectively decorated with greenery and drapes of His Excellency’s colours, chocolate and gold, the tables dotted about having an abundance of spring flowers. The staircase was transformed with nikaus, treeferns, and wattle, whilst bowls of primroses, violets, jonquills, and other spring flowers were placed on tables, etc., and the entrance hall was profusely arranged with ferns and wattle, and had large mirrors draped with the Governor's colours. The many small tables in the sup-per-room were prettily ornamented with spring flowers. There were about sixty guests present, including the Hon.
