THE TOAST OF THE BRITISH NAVY.
When the applause had subsided, Admiral Sperry rose to propose the toast of “The British Navy.” lie could not imagine, he said, any toast which gave him more pleasure to propose than the service from which they had learned their laws and customs, and which had supplied the noblest traditions from the great actions in the defence of its country. ADMIRAL SIR RICHARD POORS IN RESPONSE. It Was sohje minutes, berare Admiral Sir Richard Poore, who rose to respond, could make himself heard through the. deafening applause. He expressed' his cordial thanks for tlie manner in which the -toast was received. The cordiality had a true-ring in it. It was a ring to which, although he had been but a short time in these wafers, he was afraid he was getting accustomed to, and ho was rather afraid he was getting spoiled, (Daughter and cries of “No.") He knew that when the toast of “Tl)e Navy” was propos'ed in these waters it was received with a cordiality that ho could almost ftay-r-amd that was saying a great deal—•it, hardly ever, received anywhere else. [Hear, hear.) “To you gentlemen
cf the United States navy,” he continued, ‘*l know of old that when you said ‘Yes’ you didn’t mean ‘No’ (hear, hear), and, therefore, I thank you in the name of •Mis Majesty's navy for your wonderful reception of the toast. It is all the more {gratifying to me to Ih» able to respond to this toast because it has been proposed by ouch an officer, whom 1 have only known personally for a very short time; but it does not take long to realise what there is in him. (Hear, hear.) The fact that the toast of ‘His Majesty's Navy’ has been proposed by Admiral Sperry is one that I shall remember to the end of my days with great feelings of pride.” (Applause.) He would take the opportunity of welcoming Admiral Sperry, the officers and men of the United States navy, to what he called the Australian station (loud applause) in the name of the whole of His Majesty’s navy, who al! took an enormous interest in the visit of the United States fleet to Australasian waters. In parenthesis, he would like also to thank very cordially the Mayor of Auckland for his welcome to him today. (Hear, hear.) He would not say much, because he thought brevity in a sailor man was not a bad attribute when it came to public speaking, but there was one point they ought to remember, and that was that the armament they saw in the harbour was an armament which was made for peace, and not for war. It ■was a point that too much stress could not l>e laid upon. Jt might be a paradox, but he thought they would find that amongst- sailor men; and they were occasionally called ‘‘tarred assassins,” the more they perfected their engines of warfare, the more they felt that they’were carrying peace into the middle of the world, and not only into the middle, but into the confines of the world. One must always remember • the fact that it was not the armies and navies who declared war—they possibly made war without declaration—but it was the people of a. country. When they saw the navy of the United States, and their own navy in a smaller degree, together, he trusted and tried to believe that there would be no fear of any interference with commerce and traffic in this wide world. (Applause.) In conclusion. Admiral Sir Richard Poore said: “1 shall always consider it a very great honour that the toast has been proposed by an officer of such high, standing in the United States navy as Admiral Sperry.” At the conclusion the toast of the Prime Minister was briefly proposed,-and received with thunderous applause. Sir Joseph gracefully replied, and one of the most memorable events in connection with the visit was at an end.
