J. Wolff, after being in the water for fourteen hours, and swimming 35 miles, was compelled, owing to meeting an adverse tide, to abandon an attempt _to swim- the Channel, when within three miles of the French shore.

The half-mile swimming championship of the English Amateur Swimming Association was won by Frank E. paire, the Victorian, in 12min 44sec; F. W. Springfield being fourth.
