Dear Bee, July ?. Gisborne has at hist awakened to her social responsibilities. Last week two dances were held. The first was a very Lire-' FANCY-DRESS BALL. given by. .Mrs. P. Barker, sit her new residence in Kaiti. Practically the whole of the house was thrown open, thus giving plenty of space for . thp very, numerous guests. Very shortly after nine o’clock the scene was a very picturesque one, the costumes being both pretty and varied. 1 shall not attempt to describe all, but just mention a few of the most striking. Miss Barker took the costume of an Egyptian lady, a very handsome gown, richly coined; Miss E. Barker, Fortune Teller, in hand-painted pale blue satin, an effective costuiiie; Miss M. On Friday evening last THE MILITARY BALL of the East Coast Mounted Rilles, held in His Majesty’s Theatre, was a bril liant success, over 400 people being present. THE MEYNELL AND GUNN COMPANY are at present in Gisborne, and playing to crowded houses. Amongst the few I noticed on Wednesday evening last were: Mrs. Henry White, in blaek silk robe, yoke of Honiton lace; Mrs. Lysnar, crimson bengaline silk with blaek touches; Mrs. W. Barker, blaek silk, Oriental opera wrap of white and silver; Mrs. Kennedy, black silk, turquoise blue opera cloak; Mrs. Barton, black glace, crimson coat; Miss Hamilton, pale blue ninon de soie, geranium pink wrap; Mrs. Smith, white satin gown, finishes of chiffon and lace-. Miss Tucker, lemon satin with lace berthe; Mrs. Stephenson, yellow satin, chiffon overdress; Mrs. Winter, black silk, cream coat. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. and Miss Murchison arrived from the South on Wednesday last, and are at present staying with Mrs. Blaek (Kaiti). Mr. and Mrs. Symes and Mrs. Stephenson returned last week from a tour of the North Miss Boylan (Gisborne), who has been visiting friends in Auckland, returned last week.
