GISBORNE.

Dear Bee, May 28. Gisborne socially is deadly dull at the present time. With the exception of a few small evening# and afternoons there is nothing going on in our social world. A few of the ladies here, to fill the gap apparently, and attain proficiency in th#

art of bridge, have formed a small Bridge Club, The initial meeting was held at Mrs. A. Rees’ residence, about a dozen ladies being present. It was decided to hold a Bridge Afternoon at the houses of the members on Monday afternoons. The first afternoon, held on last Monday week, was at Mrs. Carmichael’s house, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent.

Last Monday Bridge was played at Mrs. A. Rees’, a good number of spectators being present on this occasion.

A great loss this winter is the falling through of the Assembly Dances, which have been held in Gisborne every successive winter for about seventeen years. Unfortunately the committee was not sufficiently encouraged to be enabled to carry on, so the dances had to be dropped. I think I shall have to wait for a week or tw T o before writing you again, until I have something more exciting to record. PARAGRAPHS ABOUT PEOPLE. Dr. Pottinger, who has been carrying on Dr. Scott’s practice during his recent illness, has entered into partnership with Dr. Scott. Mrs. C. P. Davies left by the Maheno on Sunday for the South. Mr. Norman Mair, for some time manager for Messrs. Hoadley and Co., in Gisborne, has been transferred to the Hastings branch of the same company. Mr. Mair was a great favourite during his residence in Gisborne. Mr. Gaddum succeeds Mr. Mair. Mr. and Mrs. Gaddum are at present staying at “Sandown,” the residence of Mrs. Gaddum’s mother (Mrs. Reynolds), and intend remaining there during the latter’s stay in England. The Misses Black, with their two brothers, are spending the winter months in Sydney and Brisbane.
