were found to be disqualified by a simple error, showing either lack of attention or imperfect acquaintance with the English language on the part of competitors. Over a hundred competitors had either misread the word “pinion" as “opinion," or hud formed the idea that by writihg “o pinion” they were complying with the terms of the competition. One competitor used “pinion” in the sense of “pennon.” Setting these papers aside, there still remained 110, in which the correct word was used. These, again, had to be sifted, and when all showing faulty metre or commonplace treatment were
