WELLINGTON RACING CLUBS AUTUMN MEETING.

FIRST DAY. DEAD-HEAT IN THOMPSON HANDICAP. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. 1 he autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was opened to-day, when the weather was dull and threatening, with a cold southerly wind. The attendance was about 3(NX), which is hot up to previous years. The racing was interesting, especially the chief event (the Thompson Handicap), in which bunbonnet and, Sea King fought out a desperate finish. The sum of £11,469 was passed through the totalisator, as against £12,842 (which included double machine) last year. Thirteen bookmakers were licensed to bet inside at £2O 10/ (including clerk's fees) and 21 outside at £lO 10/ (including clerks' fees). The results ot the later events are as follows: — Thompson Handicap of SOOsovs, one mile. — XV. Cooper’s b m Sunbonnet, syrs, 7.2 (E. Lowe), *; 11. F. Nicholls' b g Seq King, 6.11 (A. J. 1). Ormond’s pair were favourites. When barrier was lilted Gold Crest, who was on the move, -shot out, while White Lie was the last to leave the mark. After, traversing a furlong Sea King lushed up t<; the leader, and, soon supplanting him, carried on the running, while Sunbonnet, Gold Crest, Stratagem, and Dawn headed the next division. At the half-mile post Sea King was still in th.e van. while Sunbc.nnet was closing up, and Gold Crest began to fall away. Sea King showed the way into the straight, and at the distance had about half-a-length’s lead of Sunbonnet, while Aboriginal put in a great run from the centre of the next division and Stratagem improved his position. A hundred yards from home Sea King and Sunbonnet were abreast on terms, and in a punishing finish they swept past the post, the judge being unable to separate them, while Aboriginal was only a length and a-half away. Stratagem was fourth a >1 Dawn fifth, the two last to finish being Moriarty and Zimmerman. Time, 1.43 4-5. North Island Challenge Stakes of 400sovs, seven furlongs. J. Monk's blk c Diabolo, 2yrs, 6.13 (K. Hatch), 1; Sir George Clifford's br c Glenculloch, 8.8 (G. Price). 2; G. F. Moore’s (’arissima. 9.1 (R. Cameron), 3. Also started: Husbandman. 7.4; Formative, 7.1. After a couple of furlongs were covered Glenculloch took charge, and came round the turn into the straight with quite a length's lead. Here Diabolo, who had been running fourth, came with a wet sail on the outside and won very easily by four lengths, a length separating the second and third horses. Time. 1.32. Plunket Nursery Handicap of 120sovs. five furlongs. Sir George Clifford's ch f Flitaway. 9.2 (F. E. Jones). 1; J. s. Thane’s b f Artilleiie, 8.10 (W. Ryan), 2; A. Jackson's b c Roosevelt, 7.0, 3. These were the only starters. Flitaway shot out at the start and led all the way, winning very easily. Artiilerie, on sufferance, getting within half-a length of the filly at the post. Roosevelt was a poor third. Time, 1.4 3-5. Railway Handicap of 200sovs, six furlongs. S. Messena's br c Motoa. 4yrs, 8.5 (W. McKayjr, 1: J. Melrose’s Truganini. G.lO (E. Lowe), 2; 11. F. Nicholls’ b in Cross Battery, 8.0 (Hatch), 3. Also started: Ballarat 5.7: Martyrium, 8.0. This was a poor start Ballarat being left. Truganini and Martyrium raced at once to the front. Martyrium died away as the straight was enter(d, and then Moton and Truganini singled th<‘mselves out in a ding-dong finish from the d'stnuce, which resulted in a head victory for the former. Time, 1.1*7 1-5. Tinakori Hack Handicap of loOsovs. six furlongs. -W. Moore’s I) c Sir Frisco. 3yrs, 8.4 (XV. Ryan), 1: A. Barclay’s b c Penates, 8.11 (T. Pritchard), 2; XV. Davies' b in Yo saml, 7.11 (G. Price). 3. Also started: Mon Ami. 9.0; Bluebell. 7.11: Blue Kibb<m. 7.0. Mon Ami shot away from the barrier and led for a whih*, but died to nothing before the straight was reached, where Sir Frisco, in the <’entre of the course, cut down all opposition and won easily. Time. 1.18 2-5. SECOND DAY. XVELLINGTON, Sunday. There was splendid weather for the coucludiiig day of the autumn meeting yesterday, and the attendance was between 4000

and stfoo. ’The flags on -the stand were flying halt-mast out of respect to the late Mr G. G. Stead, and many of the jockeys wore crape on the arm. Speculation was fairly brisk.r £15,6601 going through the. machines, making £27,124 for; the, meeting, against £30,704 last year. Twelve bookmakers. were licensed inside and 19 outside.

The field were quickly despat' hed on even terms; Marguerite and ('arissima being quickest on their feet, with Moloch last. Marguerite and (’arissima led along the back stretch, with Stratagem third and Taugimoana fourth, Moloch still being last, (’arissima swept round the home turn with a slight advantage of Marguerite, but Taugimoana came with a fast run, and, having all the best of the run home, won by a length from White Lie. who cut down Marguerite and ('arissima in the straight. A length and a-half separated the second and third horses; then came ('arissima, Stratagem, and Gazeley. with Moloch last. Time, 2.10 1-5.

New Zealand St. Leger of 400sovs, second horse to receive 50sovs and third horse 25sovs from the stake, one mile and threeqnarters.—Mr G. J. Moore’s br c Signor, by Pilgrim’s Progress—Ma Mie Rosette, 8.10 (R. Cameron), 1: Mr J. Buckley’s b c All Red, by Stepniak—Madder, 8.10 (K. Hatch) 2; Sir G. Clifford's br c Glenculloch, by (’lanranald—Madowla, 8.10 (F. E. Jones), 3. Also started: Gold Crest, 8.10; The Libyan. 8.7. The Libyan led past the stand, just dear of All Red. the favourite (Gold Crest), under a strong pull, lying last. At the back of the course The Libyan gave way to Signor, who was clear of All Red. while Gold Crest was steadily improving his position. As the field neared the top turn Glenculloch ran up into second place behind Signor. . but was soon supplanted by Gold Crest, All Red. holding a good position alongside Glenculloch. Signor entered the straight full of running, while Gold Crest began to fall away. All the w’ay home Signor improved his advantage, and won comfortably by three lengths, Glenculloch being a length behind All Red. Gold Crest finished fourth and The Libyan last. Time, 3.3.

Pacific Handicap of 175sovs. second horse to receive 25sovs and third horse .lOsovs from the stake, for two and three-year-olds, five furlongs.—Mr J. Monk's Gipsy Belle, 2yrs, by Stepniak—Belle Clair, 7,.7 (R. Hatch). 1; Mr R. XV. Patterson’s blk f Mon Ami; 3yrs. 8.8 (A. Oliver), 2; Mr E. J. Watt’s b c Moriarty. 3yrs. 8.13 (D. Price), 3. These were the only starters. Gipsy Belle jumped away with the lead, and never gave the other pair a cham e. winning very easily by three lengths. Timo. 1.3 2-5.

Suburban Handicap of 150sovs. six furlongs.— Mr XX’. A. Donald's bik g Aboriginal, syrs, by Merriwee—Polly, 7.8 (A. Oliver), 1; Mr S. Messena’s br c Motoa, 9.0, 2; Mr Ross Allen's blk m Ballarat. 8.8, 3. Also started: Sunbonnetp 8.4; Kitchenmaid, 7.3; All (hms,. 7.3. Aboriginal jumped out from the barrier, with a slight advantage, followed by All Guns and Sunbonnet. Rounding the top turn Aboriginal had a lead of a couple of lengths from All Guns, and Ballarat, who had been racing in the rear, ran up fourth. Motoa made his effort in the straight, but Aboriginal easily stalled off the challenge, and won by a length, a similar distance between the second and third horses. Sunbonnet finished fourth. Time, I. • Belmont Hack Handicap of lOOsovs, six furlongs.—Mr A. Barclay’s b c Penates, 3yrs. by Ruenalf—Housewife, 9.0 (T.‘ Pritchard), 1; Mr XV. Moore's b c Sir Frisco, 8.12, 2; Mr XV. Davies’ b ni Yosami, 7.8, 3. Also started: Bluebell, 7.4; Blue Ribbon, 8.7. Penates and Bluebell were first away, but Yosami was first into the straight.
