NAPIEF FIRE BRIGADE. On page 27 wc give a piciturc of the Napier Fire Brigade, from which Superintendent Gilberd (shown in the photo.) recently resigned on account of 111 health. Much regret was expressed on all sides. Mr. Gilberd is (says the Napier “Telegraph”) one of the oldest firemen in Napier, having taken an active part in the organisation of the brigade in 187fi, the only other member who has remained in active service since being Fireman Hartley. For 18 years Mr. Gilberd acted as sub superintendent un der Superintendent Waterworth, but for the last ten years he has been at the head of the brigade. Ho has acted as secretary of the United Fire Brigades* Association for 22 years. His greatest cx|>erience of fire fighting was in the big fire of 1880, when Tennyson street and Fmerson-street were swept by fiames. He has successfully directed operations in all the outbreaks of recent years, and aome smart pieces of work stand to his credit.
