SHOES MADE IN TWO AND A-HALF HOURS.
A story of lightning-like rapidity in cobbling is told by a boot paper. It appears that while the German Emperor was in England a London bootmaker received an order for a pair of boots for the Imperial feet. A messenger was dehatched early in the morning with several pairs of the highest-priced footgear, none of which suited the Emperor. An offer to make a pair of boots was accepted by the Kaiser’s adjutant, and on a telephone message to the factory in London two men were put to work. At 1.20 in the afternoon the Royal boots were completed and forwarded to the German monarch. The boots, which, report says, fitted perfectly, were worn by his majesty the same evening. The time consumed in making them was two hours and 30 minutes. ♦ ♦ * ICE IN DENTISTRY. The first use of ice in dental operations was in what the publie term the “freezing system.” This, application is still in use in provincial towns, but (says “lee and Cold Storage’!) it has for several years been discontinued in London and other large cities. The first use of ice in thfts way was in America. Tne ice was cut up fine, placed in small bags so shaped as to fit each side of the jaw, and the wretched patient held these in his mouth until the desired temperature was reached, when the operator extracted the offending molar or molars. To-day cold air is pumped into the mouth with more effect, and without any of the pain and inconvenience that must have attended the more primitive” style. Iced water is always used by dentists in America, but it is never used anywhere else. 4 > 4 AGES OF ANIMALS. Many animals live to a great age, while others die soon after birth.
