Two £ 1 notes, closely stuck together, passed through several hands recently as a single note. They were first of all paid in Masterton to a Carterton resident, and to both parties they appeared as one piece of scrip. The receiver in town passed them on to his landlady as the equivalent of one pound sterling. In the course of a few days she sent them along to a grocer’s shop, expecting to receive back certain goods and change for the balance from 20/. When the messenger returned he handed the good lady £1 more than she had expected, with the explanation from the shopkeeper that he had discovered two notes adhering together and appearing as one. Investigation followed, and it was found that, although the notes, which were new, had been paid out individually by the bank teller, they had become attach* ed in the pocket of the Mastertou reaident.
