Dear Bee, January 17. A TENNIS PARTY was given by Mrs. Wilding on Wednesday, the 15th, at Tier residence, Opawa, when a most amusing tournament was played between twelve ladies—Mrs. George Gould, Mrs. Algar Williams, and the Misses Pitman, Symes, Cracroft-Wilson, Kettle, Harley, Meares, Wood, Campbell, Finch, and Anderson—and twelve of the officers of the squadron now in Lyttelton. The prize-winners were: Miss Pitman, and Mr. Fawcett, of H.M.s. Powerful. Mrs. Wilding received her numerous guests on the lawn. She wore a pretty toilette of black and white floral net, with black and white toque en suite; Miss Wilding, blue and white floral muslin, trimmed with lace, pretty white hat; Mrs. Boyle, costume of cream serge, black hat and feathers; Mrs. Julius, black silk and lace dress, black bonnet with pink roses; Mrs. Pitman, a taffeta silk of olive green shade, Tuscan hat with roses; Mrs. Palmer, black silk anu lace costume, black and white bonnet; Mrs. John Anderson, bright blue silk, with cream lace vest, pretty blue toque; Miss Anderson, white embroidered muslin, white hat; Mrs- John Deans, dress of black crepe de-chine, with black and white toque; Mrs. Symes, black ninon over white uilk, small floral hat: Mrs. Nancarrow, black taffetas, black hat with pink roses; Mrs. A. C. Wilson. costume of pale green cloth, white hat with roses; Miss Bloxam, pretty green arid white striped muslin, fream lace vest relieved' with touches of pale pink, white hat with bunches of violets; Mrs. Bloxam, dovegrey silk, trimmed with eream lace and black velvet, black and white toque; Mrs. W. Wood, pale blue and. white striped muslin, black and white hat; Miss Wood, white muslin dress with pale pink chiffon silk scarf, white hat;- Mrs. G. F. Ronalds, white muslin frock, large pink and white, hat; Mrs. Guy Pascoe, heliotrope and white muslin, heliotrope toque; Mrs.. A. Morton Ollivier, black and white striped muslin, black and white toque en suite;. _ Miss Ollivier, white muslin, white hat with feathers. Others present were Dr. and Mrs. Chilton, Dr. and, Mrs. Talbot; Mrs. and Miss Burns, Dr. and Mrs. Finch, Mrs. Ronalds, and Mrs. Michael Gampbell. Very great interest was centred in the tournament, for throughout the play was excellent. Delicious afternoon tea, fruits, ices, and all sorts of refreshments were served out of doors. In the evening Mrs. Wilding gave a dance to the players, all of whom were present, also the Misses Moore (2), Misses Burns (2), Miss Martin, Misses Anderson. Meares, and Campbell. The dance was thoroughly enjoyed by those present, and proved a pleasant finale to an altogether delightful day. A CARPET DANCE was given by Mis,s Hawkins last week at Bealey Avenue. The guests, of whom there were about twenty, were, received by Lieutenant-Colonel, Mrs. and Miss Hawkins. The rooms were gracefully decorated with flowers, and the pretty little garden was used for walking in ami sitting out between the dances. During the week the officers of H.M.S. Powerful have, given several enjoyable AFTERNOON. TEA PARTIES. Amongst those invited were Mrs. and Miss Boyle, Mr. and Mrs. Algar Williams, Mr., Mm/ and Miss Wilding. Mrs. and Miss Pitman, Mrs. and the Misses Burns, and Mr. and‘Mrs. J. D. Hall. A NOVELTY IN "AT HOMES” was given by Mrs. Paterson at Papanui. This was a “Limerick Afternoon,” each guest having to bring a Limerick rhyme of her own competition. The reading aloud of these, gave great amusement, several of them being very original and clever. After the prizes had been presented an adjournment was made to the dining-room 1 for afternoon tea, and a merry hour passed away all too rapidly. Mrs. Paterson wore a charming gown of white muslin and satin. Amongst the guests were Mrs. Carey Hill. Mrs. J. Fairlfurst,, Mrs. Mcßeth, Mrs. Moore, Mrs, Quauo. Mrs. Morton. Mrs. Thompson, Mis. F. Graham, Mrs. Diamond, Mrs. Chilton, and Mrs. Staveley.
